Mitsubishi just announced a recall, and it’s an absolutely huge one. The automaker is expanding a backup camera failure recall that it hoped would only affect 90,000 SUVs through the 2023 model year. It now includes 198,940 Outlander SUVs through the 2025 model year. Here are the makes and models:
- 2022–24 Mitsubishi Outlander
- 2023–25 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV
Why is Mitsubishi recalling Outlander SUVs?
The automaker warns that its full-size SUV’s Bosch-built infotainment system “may freeze or display a blank screen.” If the screen fails while reversing, it will block the view of the backup camera.
The good news is that this isn’t an issue with the camera. Mitsubishi hopes it can fix the problem with a software patch. It is promising to update every affected Outlander for free the next time the SUV is at a dealership.
Note, the automaker is referring to this as Mitsubishi recall SR-23-001.
How big is the Mitsubishi Outlander recall?
Mitsubishi has expanded its Outlander recall to nearly 200,000 SUVs. For comparison’s sake, Honda is the Japanese automaker with the most recalls so far in 2025. But Honda’s 11 recalls affect just 469,289 individual vehicles. Stellantis US has 11 recalls affecting 140,197 vehicles total. So while Mitsubishi has fewer recalls, it has more vehicles needing recall work than Jeep, Dodge, Chrysler, and Fiat combined.
Again, Mitsubishi is hoping this will be a quick and easy software patch, and there’s no reason to doubt that yet. But we’ll have to wait and see if other Mitsubishi vehicles use the same Bosch components and have the same problem.
