“Take your GoJo and throw it right in the trash.” my_mobile_mechanic_ works on cars, so his hands get really, really dirty. Lots of mechanics use a scrub product specifically marketed to them, like GoJo. These tubs of sandy goop come scented in flavors like cherry or almond, but I’ll throw in my two cents that most shop scrubs just flat-out suck. Luckily, this tech just shared a handwashing hack that everyone can use at home. I spent more than a decade trying out the other options; I’d take this hack over any of those. So if you’re working around the house or just find yourself needing some new-looking hands, listen up. All you need are two common kitchen items.

Mechanic shows the world the ultimate handwashing hack

“Grab yourself some sugar,” he begins. The tech keeps his in a plastic storage container next to the slop sink. This is just regular white refined sugar, by the way.

Pour some into your hand. The mechanic doesn’t measure, but it looks like about ¼ cup.

Next, take a little bit of Dawn dish soap. My_mobile_mechanic_ mixes a squirt of Dawn with the sugar. FYI, he has the bottle that stands on its head for easy one-handed dispensing.

Start scrubbing. “Wait til you see how clean my hands get,” he asserts during the tutorial.

After a few seconds, you can add a bit of water.

Continue scrubbing away from the faucet, letting the sugar and soap remove dirt and degrease all surfaces.

After a good rinse, check out the results.

And yeah, sure, many of the commenters joke that the mechanic just “reinvented” the femme sugar scrub that lots of people use in their bathrooms. Here’s the thing: a lot of sugar scrubs marketed as spa products have additives that aren’t all that great for our health. And anyway, how much are we paying for the packaging?

Next time you’ve got grubby hands, or need some exfoliating, you might try sugar and Dawn dish soap.
