The 2024 Ford Mustang kicks off the model’s seventh generation of pony cars. Better yet, the return of the GT means V8 power and tire-roasting antics. However, even with the better part of 500 horsepower, is the 2024 Ford Mustang GT that fast? Or is the Coyote-powered S650 Mustang doomed to live in the shadow of sports car rivals like the Nissan Z and Toyota GR Supra?

How fast is the 2024 Ford Mustang GT?

Unsurprisingly, the V8-powered Mustang GT accelerates with urgency. If you opt for a model that does its shifting for you, a 10-speed automatic S650 Mustang GT will hit 60 mph in under 4.0 seconds.

0-60 mph4.2 seconds (manual), 3.9 seconds (auto)
¼ mile12.5 seconds at 115 mph (manual),12.2 seconds at 117 mph (auto)
Top speed155 mph (governed)

As expected, owners who choose a manual transmission won’t be able to match the quick-shifting auto’s acceleration times. In testing, the rowable Mustang GT was about 0.3 seconds behind its auto-magic counterpart in the sprint to 60 mph and the standing quarter mile.

With up to 486 horsepower, the 2024 Ford Mustang GT is the most powerful GT to date

The 2024 Ford Mustang GT produces 480 horsepower and 415 lb-ft of torque. However, adding the optional performance exhaust system will bump power output to 486 ponies. It’s the most potent Mustang GT in the Blue Oval’s history.

Horsepower486 hp
Torque418 lb-ft
Curb weight3,947 lbs (manual)

The extra power is necessary, too; the new Mustang GT adds 69 lbs to the outgoing S550 model’s curb weight. Still, with the performance exhaust option, the new GT will outmuscle the 2023 model by 36 horsepower, adding over half a pony per extra pound of weight.

Is the new S650 Mustang GT faster than the previous model?

As expected, the 2024 Ford Mustang GT is quicker than the outgoing 2023 model. However, the gap between the S650 and S550 GT models is better illustrated with the grab-a-gear manual options.

The Getrag MT82 six-speed manual transmission carries over from 2023 to 2024. Still, the newer model manages to outrun the outgoing model to 60 mph by around 0.2 seconds and nearly half a second in the standing quarter mile.
