The family crossover SUV is a segment full of choices. There are so many options, it can be very difficult to choose for anyone that is shopping. The 2020 Toyota Highlander comes along with Toyota’s reputation for reliability. However, the 2020 Dodge Durango turned up with fewer problems per 100 vehicles than the Highlander.

In fact, the Dodge Durango crossover SUV topped the Toyota Highlander by three spots. J.D. Power has a list of the top 10 2020 family SUVs in terms of quality. After collecting data from real owners, the list is presented in the order of how many problems each SUV had per 100 vehicles. The 2020 Dodge Durango is in spot No. 5 and the 2020 Toyota Highlander is in spot No. 8.

Both of these family SUV options are great for different reasons. There are many families that choose the Highlander instead of the Durango and vice versa. According to this J.D. Power list, however, the Dodge Durango proved itself better than the Toyota Highlander.

The 2020 Toyota Highlander

For 2020, the Toyota Highlander got a redesign. This is a three-row crossover SUV that makes a great family vehicle. With options for seating seven or eight passengers and high reliability ratings, it’s no wonder that the Highlander is such a popular choice.

The 2020 Toyota Highlander also offers powertrain options. There is a 295 horsepower V6 engine. In addition, there’s a hybrid option reported to get up to 36 mpg on average.

The Highlander can come in one of five trim levels. There’s an upgraded 12.3-inch infotainment system. Plus, there’s improved driver’s assistance features. For families that choose the all-wheel-drive Toyota Highlander, the system is more advanced than previous model years.

The 2020 Dodge Durango

Three places higher on the list is the 2020 Dodge Durango. This family SUV offers seating for seven. It’s certainly brawnier than the Highlander, with a greater towing capacity than most of its rivals. Still, it retains a sleeker size than a full-size SUV.

You can get the Dodge Durango with a V6 or an even more potent V8 engine. For 2020 the Durango got some fresh appearance packages for both the SRT and the R/T models. The SRT Dodge Dodge Durango is particularly desirable to some. With a 475 horsepower Hemi V8 engine, this version of the 2020 Dodge Durango can reach 60 mph in just under four and a half seconds.

Is the Durango actually better?

Both the 2020 Toyota Highlander and the 2020 Dodge Durango made the top 10 highest quality 2020 family SUVs according to J.D. Power consumer data. It’s a close call. The Durango had 138 problems per 100 vehicles. The Highlander had 142 problems per 100 vehicles in the J.D. Power survey.

As each of these family SUV options is vastly different than the other, they will appeal to different buyers. Each family has different priorities when shopping for a new crossover SUV. Some may want the power of something like the Durango, while others will go for the hybrid Highlander. In the end, it’s up to the buyers to make the choice. While it’s hard to say which is actually the better option, we can say that J.D. Power does report fewer problems for the 2020 Dodge Durango.
