Ram is taking a huge leap forward with the 2025 Ram 1500. This is the model year we expect to see the new electric REV model, the unique PHEV Ramcharger, and a new powertrain lineup. In 2025, Ram won’t offer this half-ton truck with a V8 engine. Instead, a new engine gives higher Ram 1500 trims the desired power.

What is the new engine for the 2025 Ram 1500?

The new Hurricane engine brings the desired power and performance to the half-ton Ram truck. This powertrain begins with a 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged 6-cylinder engine. This engine has a forged steel crankshaft and cast aluminum pistons to make it stronger and more powerful than other similarly sized V6 engines.

The Hurricane engine delivers 420 horsepower and 468 lb-ft of torque in its basic setup, making it much more powerful than the old-school 5.7-liter Hemi V8. The standard Hurricane engine resides in the engine bay of the Rebel and Laramie trims.

Higher 2025 Ram 1500 trims come with a more powerful version of the Hurricane engine. This High Output variant increases power to 540 horsepower and 521 lb-ft of torque. This High Output model sends power to the wheels of the Limited, Limited Longhorn, and Tungsten trims.

The Tradesman, Big Horn, and Lone Star trims still utilize the venerable 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 engine and 48-volt mild-hybrid system to return 305 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque to the wheels. The standard Hurricane engine is optional for these trims.

Every 2025 Ram 1500 powertrain features a ZF 8-speed automatic transmission.

Does this new powertrain suffer from turbo lag?

Testers from Road and Track report that the new Hurricane engine has a noticeable turbo lag, causing drives to wait for the power boost to build. The High Output version has slightly more lag than the standard model, but once the turbos are spooled up, this truck can be easy to drive and enjoy.

What does the Tungsten trim include?

The 2025 Ram 1500 Tungsten is a luxurious truck that tops the charts for Ram. This new trim includes leather upholstery on nearly every surface inside this pickup. Everywhere you look, you’ll find upscale, luxurious style and materials that make this pickup look and feel impressive.

Some of the high-end features you’ll find are:

  • 25-way power-adjustable front seats
  • Power headrests
  • Massaging functions in the front seats
  • 23-speaker Klipsch audio system
  • Two wireless phone chargers
  • Level 2 hands-free highway driving

What should we expect out of this new powertrain?

The new Hurricane powertrains produce more power than the old Hemi V8s while using two fewer cylinders. This should translate to better towing power and improved fuel economy figures. We’ll have to wait for the EPA to test this new powertrain and report those figures.
