If you’re a car enthusiast, especially a hot hatch fan, you’ve likely seen the new 2023 Honda Civic Type R. The redesign is controversial, perhaps not as much so as the kidney grilles on some newer BMWs, but still a topic of disagreement in car culture. Gone are the overdesigned vents and sharp edges in favor of simplified lines. Still, Car and Driver and MotorTrend agree that the design update is a welcome maturation over the previous generation.

Which generation of Type R is the 2023 model?

The 2023 Honda Civic Type R is the 11th generation Type R. The Type R redesign marks a dramatic exterior styling shift but retains a familiar interior. Still, instead of releasing an entirely redesigned car, Honda will use the 2.0L turbocharged engine from the 10th generation FK8 car. Still, the controversy around the car doesn’t pertain to the powertrain but rather the styling refresh.

What’s wrong with the 10th generation Honda Civic Type R?

In 2016, Honda released the 10th generation Civic Type R, which was a lot to take in. In fact, Car and Driver described the previous bodywork as “polarizing” and “styling only kids could love.” It is difficult not to agree with them. The FK8 is characterized by sharp edges, vents, and overstyled lines. Many fans love the look, but that wasn’t enough to stop Honda from updating the new 11th generation Type R.

What is different about the 2023 Type R’s styling?

The common terminology seems to be “matured” regarding the upcoming 2023 Honda Civic Type R and its redesign. MotorTrend says that Honda refined and matured the Type R with the forthcoming generation. However, Honda didn’t compromise its performance credentials in doing so. Specifically, the new Type R is wider, lower, and longer, with deliberate aerodynamic design language.

The redesign isn’t all reserved, though. Honda made sure to add elements that telegraph its status as the premier Honda hot hatch. For instance, its honeycomb grille in the lower front fascia rises to meet the upper grille, prominently displaying a set of red badges. It does have some handsome features.

What colors will the new Honda Civic Type R come in?

Honda is proud to announce that the new 2023 Civic Type R will come in five colors. Shoppers can choose Rallye Red, Boost Blue, Crystal Black Pearl, Sonic Grey Pearl, and Historic Championship White. Fans will undoubtedly be excited to get their 11th generation Type R in the immediately recognizable white hue.

Is the Type R worth it?

If you’re looking for a more refined Type R with more power and arguably better looks, the upcoming hot hatch might be just right for you. Also, if Honda prices it competitively with the 328-horsepower Volkswagen Golf R, it might continue to be a solid contender for fans. However, if you prefer the older aesthetic, don’t fret. You can still find a 10th generation Type R and make it your own.
