We have been spending a lot of time with the BMW 2 Series coupe, and we aren’t complaining. It’s a fun option for road trips and errands. Really, we will accept any reason to take the 2022 BMW 230i for a spin as our week with the entry-level model.

Is the 2022 BMW 230i coupe worth buying?

Yes, if you want a nimble, athletic option, the 2022 BMW 230i coupe won’t let you down. It’s called the ultimate driving machine, and we can see why. The powerful engine, upscale interior, and premium characteristics create a well-rounded package unless you need passenger space.

We took the BMW 2 Series from Asheville, NC, to Charlotte, NC, on a mission to test a restored International Scout and learned a lot about the Bavarian beast. Our entry-level model is equipped with the M Sport Package and the Dynamic Handling Package.

So it includes 19-inch M Double-spoke bi-color wheels, variable sport steering, the M Sport differential, M Sport brakes with red calipers, the M Sport steering wheel, and the M Sport suspension.

How does the 230i drive?

Our 2022 BMW 230i M Sport tester has the 2.0-liter twin-power turbo inline-four engine that provides 255 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. It’s paired with an eight-speed sport automatic transmission and its rear-wheel drive.

According to Edmunds, it can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 5.5 seconds, allowing it to match rivals. It offers an instant acceleration with plenty of power for merging into traffic and passing others on the highway.

The steering is pretty direct but can feel heavy at times. The brakes are strong and confident, but they’re a little sensitive. It takes a bit of practice to master smooth stops. Plus, the M Sport suspension confidently controls body roll.

This coupe is excellent for corning and is pretty fun around steep mountain curves. The tires feel connected to the road to provide reassuring feedback. Even in heavy rain, the BMW 230i feels well-planted and in control.

The biggest problem was Labor Day weekend traffic. Congested highways in the afternoon limited us to a speed of 40 mph for most of the way. Constantly stopping for slow traffic required a ton of braking.

Our favorite driving mode is the Sport Mode. It adjusts the throttle response and tightens the steering for a more engaging experience with more confident braking.

How comfortable is the BMW 2 Series?

The 2022 BMW 230i has large, supportive seats with the right amount of bolstering to hold you in place. The driver and front passenger have plenty of space, but the front seats could use more adjustment controls. You can access four cup holders in the front.

There’s no way an adult will fit in the rear. The backseat is for children only, and the seats slide pretty far forward to allow easy access. There’s enough space for a few duffle bags back there, and the trunk can fit about two suitcases.

We were surprised by how much road and wind noise enters the cabin at highway speeds, but the HiFi audio system drowned things out. Also, the suspension is a little stiffer than expected, but placing the vehicle in Comfort mode smooths things out a bit.

The navigation system is responsive, and the 8.8-inch infotainment screen is easy to use. You can check the weather along your route, and the head-up display shows your navigation steps.

The safety systems, such as forward collision warning and lane-keeping assist, can seem sensitive at times, but they also make us feel safe.

Overall, driving the 2022 BMW 230i is a low-effort, fun, and comfortable experience. But after six hours, we wish the seats had a little more padding.
