Ohh, Ford, you tease. On Twitter, Ford has confirmed that a new Super Duty truck will be coming soon, and that it will release the details on Sept. 27. In the tweet, of course, Ford doesn’t share anything. The only tantalizing thing we can see: a C-shaped LED light cluster around the headlight like the F-150 Lightning’s on a new Super Duty truck, or one of the F-250, F-350 and F-450, trucks.

What does Super Duty mean?

The Super Duty trucks carry the heavy stuff. While the F-150 is the truck most of us see on the road, or even use, the Super Duty trucks are the ones that you see at job sites towing massive trailers and hauling huge amounts of stuff. These things can tow up to 37,000 pounds with a gooseneck trailer and up to 7,850 pounds in the bed. These are not upgraded consumer trucks, but purpose-built work trucks on their own frame that can be basic or luxurious. The trucks are so popular that Ford essentially sold out of 2022s.

Ford created the Super Duty line in 1999 and they have gone through four generations. The current generation was launched in 2017 and was the first all-new version of the truck since 1999. Like the F-150, the Super Duty was given an aluminum frame that saved hundreds of pounds weight, which not only helped the trucks get better fuel economy but allowed them to tow and haul more. Today, you can order it with a 6.2-liter V8 that has 385 horsepower, a 7.3-liter with 475 horsepower, or the 6.7-liter Power Stroke V8 diesel that makes an astounding 1,050 lb.-ft of torque and 475 horsepower.

What’s expected to be different on the new Super Duty trucks?

What can be expected on the new 2023 Super Duty? According to Jalopnik, the new Super Duty will get a revamped, larger, gasoline V8 option. The 6.2-liter BOSS engine will go away and get replaced by a new 6.8-liter. Others have reported that the new trucks will get a new grille, an updated interior, and updated bed steps. That’s not a whole lot, but the trucks sell well and since they’re comparatively low-volume products, it doesn’t make sense to completely revamp them every few years.

Ford has hinted at the new truck, though only obliquely. In June the company announced that it was adding thousands more union jobs to plants in Ohio, Michigan and Missouri. The Ohio plant makes E-Series vans and Super Duty chassis cabs, as well as some EVs.

The new Super Duty will compete with an updated Ram Heavy Duty truck

The Ram 2500 and 3500, which are Ram’s hard-working truck models, will also get an update for 2023. Ram’s engine options, including the big diesel (unlike the 1500), remain the same for 2023, but the technology should get an upgrade. The Rams will see new trailer control features, a new digital rear-view mirror, and a new gauge cluster. Some trims will also see a new Ram TRX-inspired hood, and new extending mirrors. The same trim levels are also available.

For the 2020 model year, Chevy updated the Silverado HD. The longer, wider, and taller Silverado can tow up to 35,500 pounds and you can order it in five trim levels from Work Truck to luxurious High Country. In the Chevy, you can pick a 6.6-liter 401-horsepower V8, or the mighty 6.6-liter Duramax that makes 910 lb.-ft of torque. It also has several driver’s aids that use its 15 camera views to help with everything from parking to towing.
