According to Edmunds, the 2022 Toyota Tundra SR5 is the most popular trim. Despite offering five trims higher than it, the second-cheapest option remains the most popular. Moreover, customers like the SR5 better than the SR base model. Does the additional equipment make it worth the price over the base model? Are there enough features to be more valuable than the most expensive trim levels?

The SR5 is roughly $30,000 cheaper than the most luxurious Tundra Capstone. The trim levels above the SR5 are out of reach for most buyers. Even one slot above the most popular Tundra, Limited, exceeds $51,000, which is very expensive. Most customers likely love the SR5 because it provides more value than the SR without breaking the bank. It starts at $45,200, just a few thousand more than the base model.

If customers are primarily concerned with the price, why not buy the base model Toyota Tundra SR? Well, a lot of value is packed in for the added cost of an SR5. However, that value is even higher for anyone looking for immense hauling and towing capability. It’s very likely buyers of the SR5 are looking for an affordable full-size truck with some power to tow and haul. This model adds a lot more of that than the base model comes with.

For example, every SR5 has the Towing package, which adds a Class IV trailer hitch, an integrated trailer brake controller, and four/seven-pin trailer connectors. In addition, there are adjustable tie-down cleats in the bed. Lastly, a few other items also enter the lineup here, like alloy wheels, LED foglights, and a rear center armrest with cupholders. Combined with features like Apple CarPlay/Android Auto and Toyota Safety Sense 2.5 included with the base model, the SR5 provides excellent overall value.

Not every expert agrees with customers about the best version of the 2022 Toyota Tundra. Edmunds tells its readers to go with the next step up, the Tundra Limited. Citing a 14-ich touchscreen (up from eight), hydraulic cab mounts, and an available hybrid powertrain. Although the touchscreen size is nice, we can’t justify recommending a model for that reason alone. However, Edmunds’ makes an excellent point with the smoother ride provided by the cab mounts, along with the optional hybrid, which improves fuel economy.

Alternatively, Car and Driver actually recommend the most popular Tundra. It says the SR5 with the TRD Off-Road package is the best version to buy. On top of base model features, it adds an electronically locking rear differential, unique wheels, an upgraded suspension, and more. Both of the cheapest Tundras use a standard twin-turbo V6 with an output of 379 horsepower, which is better than most competitors.

Experts and buyers disagree on the best 2022 Toyota Tundra trim

In conclusion, not every expert agrees buyers should get the 2022 Toyota Tundra SR5. It’s the most popular model because of its added value over the base model through towing tools, features, and more. The optional hybrid engine also adds an amazing upgrade to fuel economy for those who desire it. Edmunds prefers the Limited model, which adds even more tech, but for a significant price increase. Which version of the full-size truck do you think is the best?
