The 2022 Ford Maverick engine is receiving all the praise for its hybrid powertrain and incredible gas mileage. Did you know that it doesn’t only come in the hybrid variant? There’s actually another engine available as an option. It’s not hybrid so it’ll cost you more on gas, and it’s not standard so it’ll cost you more on your payment. There are two available engines for the Maverick, and each of them has pros and cons.

Standard 2.5-liter hybrid engine

The engine that comes standard on every Ford Maverick model is the 2.5-liter hybrid. That’s right, unlike most vehicles with hybrid options, the non-hybrid is the option. In fact, it’ll cost you less money to get the hybrid variant of the Ford Maverick. That might be one of its strongest features, as the hybrid engine seems amazing.

The downside of the hybrid engine is it only comes with front-wheel drive. It does, however, produce up to 162-horsepower while averaging 42 city and 33 highway miles per gallon. It has towing and payload capacities of up to 2,000 and 1,500 pounds, respectively. Other features like storage space, technology, safety, and much more don’t see any changes from one engine to the next.

Optional 2.0-liter EcoBoost engine

The optional standard gas-only engine can be added onto any trim level of the Ford Maverick. It doesn’t change very much about the truck except a slight boost in power, and a big dropoff in gas mileage. It’ll also make any version of the Maverick cost more money.

This engine helps the Maverick get up to 250-horsepower, and it comes in all-wheel or front-wheel drive. The EcoBoost all-wheel drive gets 22 city mpg and 29 highway mpg, which rises to 23 and 30 in the FWD version. Its maximum towing and payload capacity is identical to the hybrid variant unless buyers choose to add the 4K Tow Package. The tow package boosts the towing capacity up to 4,000 pounds, but the payload remains the same.

Which 2022 Ford Maverick engine is better?

We think one of the most fun and exciting parts about Ford’s new pickup truck is the hybrid powertrain. A truck capable of fuel economy that efficient is something worth noticing. The EcoBoost engine has long been a part of Ford’s lineup of vehicles and has usually failed to impress. It’s neither eco-friendly nor does it give a boost in power, so it’s quite underwhelming.

If you need extra power for towing or just driving faster, we’d recommend moving up to the Ford Ranger instead of the Maverick EcoBoost. The Ranger isn’t too much more expensive, adds a little size, and gets similar power with better standard towing capacity. The whole appeal of the Maverick is its hybrid option, so if that’s not for you, the 2022 Ford Maverick may not be either.

Ford’s technical specifications can give more information on the different engine variants, but only two engines are available for the all-new 2022 Ford Maverick. One focuses on fuel economy and efficiency but maintains a respectable amount of power. It’s enough for most people’s daily driver with the occasional haul. The non-standard option gives a slight boost in power, but with the extra cost and tremendously reduced fuel efficiency, we don’t think it’s valuable enough.
