According to Edmunds, the XL base model is the most popular 2023 Ford Maverick trim. As the cheapest trim in the lineup, it’s no surprise that most buyers choose it. Starting at $23,690, it’s challenging to question why someone would choose such a low starting price for a pickup truck. It uses the standard, fuel-efficient hybrid powertrain, plus LED headlights, cloth upholstery, air conditioning, rear under-seat storage, an eight-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, and forward collision mitigation.

For only slightly more money, the XLT trim is even better equipped. Unfortunately, the number of features it gains over the base model isn’t as plentiful. It’s likely that’s the reason why most buyers choose to get the cheapest version of the Ford Maverick.

Few features are gained by purchasing the 2023 Ford Maverick XLT over the XL base model. They are alloy wheels, upgraded upholstery, a rear center armrest with cupholders, a power-locking tailgate, and cruise control. Other than that, the XLT trim only has features already standard on the Maverick base model. Additionally, optional packages are mostly available for any trim level. Only the Lariat Luxury package is exclusive to the Lariat trim.

For example, the 4K Towing package, including a trailer hitch receiver and upgraded powertrain cooling, is available for all trims. Next, buyers can purchase the FX4 Off-Road package for any trim. However, owners must get AWD, and therefore the optional non-hybrid engine, to get the off-roading package. Finally, the Ford Co-Pilot360 package is for all trims and adds blind-spot monitor and lane-keeping assist. With all this available to all trims, should buyers actually pay more?

Which Maverick do experts recommend?

Two notable experts, Edmunds and Car and Driver recommend buying the 2023 Ford Maverick XLT. Although the mid-tier model doesn’t add a lot of features, both critics say it gains a lot for the money. Since it doesn’t cost much more than the base model, the added features feel much more valuable. Edmunds says it’s the one to get because it provides more choices if you’re interested in purchasing options. The base hybrid powertrain also provides more value and better fuel efficiency, which is a highlight of the compact truck.

Car and Driver also recommend the mid-range XLT trim. Like its colleague, the publication says it provides more value than any other trim. Plus, it’s open-ended for choosing even more features or the more powerful non-hybrid engine with all-wheel drive if buyers choose to do so.

2023 Ford Maverick XLT standard features

In conclusion, the 2023 Ford Maverick XLT does not have the best standard features. However, it does allow buyers to get the best standard features. It adds more amenities than the base model; then optional packages make it even more well-equipped. A careful buyer can get a ton of value with the XLT trim without opting for the range-topping Lariat trim. The compact truck is surprisingly well-equipped for all three trims.
