Hybrid SUVs have become popular in the United States because of the value they provide. These fuel-efficient vehicles can save drivers big bucks on gas over time. Some hybrid models also have great reliability ratings. But do hybrid SUVs last longer than gas models?

The longest-lasting SUV isn’t a hybrid

Toyota produces some of the longest-lasting vehicles on the planet. The Japanese automaker produces long-lasting automobiles in just about every vehicle segment. From the Corolla and Camry to the Highlander and 4Runner, Toyota vehicles are built to last.

New SUV models tend to last between 150,000-200,000 miles before experiencing major mechanical issues. The industry’s longest-lasting SUV is the Toyota Land Cruiser (and it certainly isn’t a hybrid). We’d call it the opposite of a hybrid, as a huge V8 engine powers the Land Cruiser. Eight-cylinder engines may be near extinction, but Toyota produces plenty of other long-lasting SUV models that use four and six-cylinder engines.

Thus far, there isn’t much evidence to prove that hybrid SUVs last significantly longer than internal combustion engine SUVs. On the contrary, ICE SUVs are still at the top of reliability rankings.

What is the longest-lasting hybrid SUV?

Toyota Motor Company also happens to produce the longest-lasting hybrid SUV, not just the longest-lasting SUV in general. The title belongs to the Toyota Highlander Hybrid midsize SUV. This model is changing the narrative surrounding hybrids because of its long-term value. It’s arguably a better buy than the ICE Highlander due to its stellar fuel economy.

The 2023 Toyota Highlander Hybrid starts at $40,620, just $4,000 more than the gas-only Highlander. Highlander Hybrids use a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine and two electric motors to make 243 horsepower and 186 lb-ft of torque. Additionally, the hybrid achieves 36 miles per gallon in the city and 35 miles per gallon on the highway, not too shabby for a midsize SUV.

The Toyota Highlander Hybrid is capable of lasting for over 200,000 miles, like its internal combustion engine counterpart. It has high reliability ratings and is considered one of the most reliable hybrid SUVs.

Should you get a Toyota Highlander Hybrid?

Toyota’s midsize hybrid SUV is a great choice for small families. It is incredibly efficient for its size and can stand the test of time. The 2023 Highlander Hybrid has a 17.1-gallon tank. It can travel for a whopping 607 miles on a single tank of gas.

If you regularly take road trips and want a family SUV that lasts over a decade, the Highlander Hybrid is a great choice. The base model Highlander Hybrid LE comes with great standard features like a leather-trimmed steering wheel, a blind-spot monitor, and a tire pressure monitoring system with individual tire indicators. It also comes with standard hill start assist control, heated outside mirrors with turn signal indicators, and full-speed range dynamic radar cruise control.

Hybrid SUVs will become increasingly important as brands push to electrify their portfolios. It’s safe to say that Toyota currently makes some of the best on the market.
