Texas may be well on its way to becoming the new automotive hub in the US. Tesla moved its headquarters there in 2021, Toyota has been building Tundras in Texas since 2006, and now DeLorean is planning on calling San Antonio its new home. DeLorean has plans to begin production on a new EV there, which could be very promising.

Most auto companies have a fascinating backstory, and DeLorean is no exception. According to My San Antonio, the original company was founded by John DeLorean in 1975. Like many automotive companies back then, he decided to make Detroit his home base.

DeLorean saw a massive spike in success thanks to Marty McFly’s trips to the future in a 1981 model in the film Back to the Future, but it wasn’t enough. By 1985, John DeLorean filed for bankruptcy, and the company was shut down. This was due in large part to lags in production because of technical difficulties, as well as poor sales.

It didn’t help that the only model ever released was the DeLorean DMC-12 or that there were never any updates.

Things took a turn for the scandalous when the FBI became involved and attempted to charge John DeLorean with drug trafficking. The case was later dropped once it was revealed that the agents involved informed John DeLorean they were investors.

10 years later, the DeLorean Motor Company was reestablished in Humble, Texas. The new founders tried to distance themselves from the original DeLorean company. Even though DeLorean Motor Company doesn’t compete on the same level as other automakers such as Ford, Toyota, and Tesla, it is taking steps to change that.

San Antonio is excited to have DeLorean headquarters

The new DeLorean headquarters will be located in Port San Antonio, near the Lackland Air Force Base. It’s reported that there will be 450 new jobs available for executives, engineering, and management.

DeLorean Motor Company plans to work with colleges such as Texas State University, Trinity University, the University of Texas at San Antonio, and Texas A&M University-San Antonio to recruit future employees.

In the future, DeLorean will focus on electric vehicles. We don’t have much information so far, but here’s what we do know.

The future is electric

One of the features which made the original DeLorean DMC-12 so popular, besides being in Back to the Future, was the gull-wing doors. In a recent ad by Italdesign, viewers can make out the silhouette of a car. Gull-wing doors slowly open, hinting that DeLorean is going back to the past for inspiration for where it’s headed in the future.

The close sibling to the gull-wing doors, the falcon-wing doors, seem to be becoming popular, as well. It’s now featured on the Tesla Model X. Whether they will make a huge comeback remains to be seen, but it’s definitely eye-catching.

DeLorean has recently revealed the new name for its latest edition. It’s called the EVolution. The official release date at this time is August 18, 2022. This is the first electric vehicle to be manufactured by DeLorean.

To be fair, Marty McFly first had the idea to make the DeLorean electric when he used a lightning strike to power the time machine so that he could get back to 1985 in the first film. This was once again replicated in the second film. They decided to use a train to get back to their timeline in the third film.

While we don’t know much about the new electric DeLorean, it’s safe to assume you won’t need a lightning strike to crank it up. In the meantime, we’ll have to wait for DeLorean to release more information about this new venture.
