Think about the variety of emotions that arise when you see the Volkswagen ID.Buzz. This new electric van looks like the former Microbus popular in the 1960s and into the 1970s as a vehicle for multiple uses. The Microbus became a symbol of the hippy generation by representing a simpler time, which many of us long for once again. The new ID.Buzz brings back that simplicity in its design, giving you a modern take on the VW Microbus.

Emotions are why Volkswagen expects the ID.Buzz to be a top seller

Using the modern electric drivetrain and the styling straight out of the Hippy era, the ID.Buzz should be a huge hit. According to Automotive News Europe, Volkswagen expects this van to reach 120,000 units per year once it’s released to each market. This retro-styled van has the qualities many consumers and businesses look for in a vehicle. This van is attractive, bringing the classic two-tone paint scheme you desire, and it has a large cabin area made for cargo or passengers.

Advance order in Europe for the new ID.Buzz electric van begins in May. Customers can take delivery of these cool-looking vehicles starting in September. This is the first stop for this VW, and all versions are available to customers on this continent. That means the passenger and cargo models as well as the short and long-wheelbase versions of this van. We will only have the long-wheelbase passenger van model when it arrives in the United States. Deliveries to our country across the pond don’t begin until 2024.

The power is right for the Volkswagen ID.Buzz electric van

This new version of the VW Microbus rides on the Volkswagen Modular Electric Drive (MEB) platform. Car and Driver tells us this is the same platform used for the Audi e-tron crossover and the Volkswagen ID.4 crossover SUV. The base version of this van features a single motor layout on the rear axle, making 201 horsepower and 229 lb.-ft. of torque. Those opting for the AWD version will see a second electric motor and increased power to 295 ponies.

Without all of the details of the battery pack, it’s difficult to predict the driving range of this electric van. Even so, if this model uses the 77-kWh, which is the expected battery for the European version, this van will have a driving range of at least 260 miles. Recharging with a DC fast-charger can take the batteries from five to 80 percent in only 30 minutes.

The look you find in the Volkswagen ID.Buzz is exactly what you expect to find. You’ll see modern electronics with digital gauges and screens but also a cool retro design with two-tone colors and finishes. We truly seem to like it when automakers bring something from a bygone era. We admire a modern build mixed with the classic elements we desire. The models heading to the United States will have seating for seven and 40 cubic feet of cargo area in the rear, giving you plenty of room for all of your stuff.

Will this electric van become a best-seller for Volkswagen?

There’s no denying the fact that VW got things right with the new ID.Buzz. This electric van has the style we love, the colors that feel like they come from the older models, and a name that’s fun to say. If the VW team is right, emotions will run high for the Volkswagen ID.Buzz. This electric van could quickly be the top-selling vehicle from this brand.
