Buying a subcompact SUV in 2022 is common for many consumers. However, some people want one that can go anywhere and do anything. While it isn’t typical for a small SUV to have off-roading capability, some come equipped for exactly that. With a name like Trailblazer, you expect the model to be able to blaze some trails. Can the 2022 Chevy Trailblazer actually be an off-road SUV?

A base model Trailblazer is not off-road ready

Starting at $22,795, the base model 2022 Chevy Trailblazer LS is not off-road ready. According to Edmunds, the cheapest version of the subcompact SUV doesn’t come with any features to help it take on dirt trails. Instead, it’s more focused on basic technology and convenience items to help it stand out from other sub-$25K SUVs. For example, it has Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, a Wi-Fi hotspot, forward collision mitigation, lane keeping assist, and automatic high beams.

Next, the LT trim adds a few other niceties for the additional cost of roughly $2,000. With a starting MSRP of $24,995, the Trailblazer LT gains cruise control, remote ignition, heated front seats, and a power-adjustable driver’s seat. Furthermore, roof rails, LED foglights, heated mirrors, and tinted windows are standard. As a result, the Trailblazer takes its first steps toward off-road capability. However, it isn’t quite there yet.

The 2022 Chevy Trailblazer Activ is a lite off-roader

The first and only entry in the Trailblazer lineup with off-road capability is the Activ trim. Starting at $26,895 MSRP, it adds many things, some off-road-focused and some not. For example, it uses the more powerful upgraded 1.3-liter turbocharged engine and optional all-wheel drive. In addition, convenience features like a heated steering wheel, simulated leather upholstery, and a rear seat center armrest are included.

For off-roading, a few things prepare the Trailblazer to blaze trails. First, the tires and suspension tunings are better for off-roading than other trims. Next, it comes with a tow hitch receiver and underbody skid plates. Finally, the subcompact SUV gets unique styling elements on the exterior, not including the two-tone roof that helps the Trailblazer Activ stand out from the crowd.

Optional packages add more

As with most vehicles, there are plenty of optional packages to choose from. 2022 Chevy Trailblazer buyers can choose to upgrade with the Sun and Liftgate package, Driver Confidence package, Convenience package, or Technology package. The Technology package, however, is only available for RS and Activ trims, while buyers can get all the others for any version of the Trailblazer.

For off-roading, we’d recommend the Technology package first and foremost. It has LED headlights, adaptive cruise control, a wireless smartphone charging pad, an eight-inch touchscreen, a high-resolution rearview camera, and a Bose premium audio system. While nothing is necessarily geared toward off-road prowess, brighter headlights and a clear camera will certainly help on dark trails.

Can the Chevy Trailblazer actually blaze trails?

In conclusion, the 2022 Chevy Trailblazer is a decent lite off-roader. As a subcompact SUV, it isn’t going to place your Jeep Wrangler, Ford Bronco, or Toyota Tacoma. Off-roading capability is limited, but the Trailblazer will handle it if you’re interested in riding on some dirt trails. However, it would be best to leave the rock-crawling and mudding to the big boys for now.
