Last November, Sharonda Hunter was heading home from Wauwatosa, Wisconsin. Halfway through her pregnancy as a surrogate, she began having fainting spells. Something she and her doctor had addressed. Hunter was able to feel them coming—except for one time, when she was behind the wheel and there was nothing she could do.

“I had to be around 25 weeks pregnant, and I had started having vasovagal syncope, so fainting spells,” she told FOX 6. “As I was turning the corner, I felt myself blacking out, and I felt my car going up on the curb.”

Latanya happened to be driving her normal route as an MCTS bus driver that day, and spotted Hunter’s car slowly crossing over the double yellow lines and slowly across the front of her bus. Hunter’s car crossed over an oncoming lane before finally coming to a stop in the grass.

The bus driver told passengers she needed to help

Latanya put her hazard lights on, exited the bus, and ran to Hunter’s driver’s side door. That’s when she knew something was wrong.

“I saw her slumped over, and I was like, ‘Oh no, she’s not awake, please be OK,'” she told the outlet over the phone. Latanya quickly called 911 and waited for authorities to arrive to make sure she was transported safely. Once Hunter was in the hands of medical personnel, Latanya returned to her route.

Reporters, along with Hunter, called her a hero. However, she doesn’t think so. Footage from the MCTS bus she was driving that day, though, shows a different story.

“I don’t really consider myself a hero. I feel like I did what I was supposed to do,” Latanya said.

Hunter is just grateful to be alive

Because of Latanya’s help, she and her unborn baby were just fine. Her car, however, ended up sideswiping another vehicle, and her car sustained minor damage. Without Latanya’s help, it could have ended up being much worse.

“She is just absolutely the sweetest person ever,” said Hunter. “She said at that time all she could do was pray for me because she didn’t know who I was.”
