We have all been waiting for the promise of flying cars and air taxis to finally come to fruition. For decades, people have been telling us that it was only a matter of time. So far, though, we haven’t even come close to living that dream.

One company is hoping to change all of that. California-based Archer Aviation announced the acquisition of its own airport in anticipation of the 2028 Los Angeles Summer Olympics. The airport, Hawthorne Municipal, is situated approximately three miles from the Los Angeles International Airport.

Archer paid $126 million for their own personal airport. The company’s selection as the official air taxi provider of the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games influenced the purchase.

“Through this exclusive partnership, the two will look to integrate Archer’s Midnight eVTOL aircraft across the LA28 Games in a variety of ways, such as transporting VIPs, fans, and stakeholders, while electrifying vertiport take-off-and-landing hubs for key venues and providing support for emergency services and security,” the company wrote.

Visitors to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics will have the option of using air taxis to get around

The company will utilize its Midnight eVTOL aircraft during the Games, pending full approval from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Archer will use the air taxis to shuttle Olympic visitors to and from downtown Los Angeles. They will use them to provide easier access to Olympic venues, including the Intuit Dome, SoFi Stadium, and Memorial Coliseum.

“We want to transform the way people get around Los Angeles and leave a legacy that shapes the future of transportation in America. There’s no better time to do that than during the LA28 Games,” said Adam Goldstein, CEO and founder of Archer Aviation. “I can’t wait to see Midnight flying passengers over Los Angeles, emblazoned with the Team USA logo and the Olympic Rings and Paralympic Agitos.”

Archer Aviation also recently announced that the Los Angeles Sports & Entertainment Commission named it the exclusive Air Taxi Partner. As part of the deal, Archer will serve as an Official Host City Supporter for the Los Angeles World Cup 2026. The company will also be an Official Super Bowl LXI Host Committee Partner.
