This year, AAA thinks 45.1 million Americans will travel during Memorial Day weekend, 87% by car. The last time anywhere near this many people left home for the holiday was 2005.

Citing lower gas prices and just the general will to live our lives, the group predicts 39.4 million people will take their cars at least 50 miles away from home base.

“While some travelers embark on dream vacations and fly hundreds of miles across the country,” explains Stacey Barber, Vice President of AAA Travel, “Many families just pack up the car and drive to the beach or take a road trip to visit friends.”

Considering all that expected Memorial Day traffic, the group offered some insights into the highest congestion times.

Road trip fuel cost considerations

AAA recommends looking for gas stations deeper in town. Stations right next to the interstate tend to charge more, the group says. Of course, be sure you’re fueling up in broad daylight at a well-populated, thriving business.

The group also suggests watching your speed. Prime fuel economy peaks at about 50 mph, AAA says, and drops at higher speeds. Reducing your speed by even five to 10 mph can increase fuel economy by upwards of 14%. Remember not to hang out in the left lane unless you’re passing, too.

Whether you’re driving or flying during Memorial Day weekend, understand that it’s going to be a busy commute. AAA says if you’re headed to Orlando, Seattle, New York, Las Vegas, Miami, San Francisco, Anchorage, Chicago, Denver, or Boston, expect a lot of fellow travelers.
