While 2024 trucks are newer and snazzier, you can still save with a 2023 model. The 2023 Ford Ranger and 2023 Toyota Tacoma are two solid trucks to consider. While the Toyota Tacoma may be more popular, the Ford Ranger has advantages you need to know about.

2023 Ford Ranger vs. 2023 Toyota Tacoma

Both the 2023 Toyota Tacoma and 2023 Ford Ranger are previous-generation models. Both trucks were redesigned to kick off a new generation for 2024. While the 2023 trucks may feel dated, they come with savings. But the Ranger has a few advantages.

1. The Ranger is more reliable than the Tacoma

According to J.D.Power, the 2023 Ranger has a reliability rating of 87 out of 100, which is great. This score is above average. Anything between 81 and 90 is above average while scores between 91 and 100 are best.

You may have expected the 2023 Tacoma to be more reliable, but it has a reliability score of 83. It’s only three points behind the Ranger, but those three points make a true difference.

The J.D.Power reliability score is based on feedback from independent and unbiased car owners. Each option is scored based on a 100-point scale based on issues that actual owners report. Everything from the paint, electronics, transmission, and engine is covered.

2. The Ranger has more standard power

The 2023 Ranger has a standard turbocharged 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine with 270 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque. It’s paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission and helps the Ranger accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 6.8 seconds.

With the 2023 Toyota Tacoma, the standard 2.7-liter four-cylinder engine cranks out 159 hp and 180 lb-ft of torque. It’s a little underwhelming.

You can upgrade to the 3.5-liter V6 engine for 278 hp and 265 lb-ft of torque. Both engines are paired with a six-speed automatic transmission and a six-speed manual is available with the V6. The V6 helps the Tacoma accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 7.7 seconds.

3. The Ranger has more muscle

When properly equipped, the 2023 Ranger can tow up to 7,500 lbs and carry a payload of up to 1,905 lbs. The bed includes six tie-downs and a central locking system in the tailgate.

The 2023 Toyota Tacoma can tow up to 6,800 lbs and carry a payload of up to 1,685 lbs. It has a bit more interior storage than the Ranger, but the Ranger could be the better work truck.

Tacoma advantages over the Ranger include better off-roading capabilities, a more comfortable ride quality, and a better resale value.
