The price of SUVs has gone up in the last few years, right along with the popularity of midsize sport utility vehicles. Kelley Blue Book says these reliable midsize SUVs under $15,000 have all the safety features buyers want at a reasonable price. Some of the best options from Toyota and Honda are listed below.

Kelley Blue Book is a big fan of the 2013 Toyota Highlander. This Toyota SUV is known for its reliability and is a long-lasting vehicle that won’t let you down. KBB also notes that the Highlander holds its value better than some of its competition. 2013 brought some new packages and safety features like a better rearview camera.

The included safety features include seven airbags, stability control, traction control, and anti-lock brakes. Kelley Blue Book suggests the four-wheel drive version to get downhill assist management. Toyota also offers the Highlander in a hybrid option, which offers even more fuel economy.

Honda’s Pilot is a reliable midsize SUV for under $15,000

You might remember the 2015 Honda Pilot as a boxy but comfortable midsize SUV. If you can find a 2015 version, the Pilot is well equipped and under budget. The Honda SUV has room for eight passengers and doesn’t skip on cargo space either. Kelley Blue Book calls it the “perfect family caravan.”

Honda included safety features like electronic stability control and driver assistance aids on the top Pilot Touring trim. Kelley Blue Book suggests this trim level as it has more features than the base level trim but still falls within budget. The experts gave this SUV a four-star safety rating, which makes it a solid choice for reliable midsize SUVs under $15,000.

Check out the Toyota Venza for a different look

Buyers who want something a little different might like the 2014 Toyota Venza. It offers five doors, room for the same amount of people, and enough cargo space to get the job done. 2014 was before many safety features were included as standard, so try to find one with more safety than less. Toyota equipped the Venza with a 3,500-pound towing capacity, one of the class’s lower weights.

The 2014 Toyota Venza had Toyota’s Star Safety System, which added enhanced vehicle stability control, traction control, and anti-lock brakes. Toyota also featured braking assist and smart stop technology in the Venza.

These Honda and Toyota vehicles fall within the budget, but don’t be afraid to expand your search. You might be able to find a 2012 Toyota Highlander with low miles that has a better price than a 2013 version. The best reliable midsize SUV under $15,000 is one you can find and drive away in. The used car market should slow down soon enough, but not soon enough for some.
