2024 Toyota Tacoma: The Menu Gets Larger With Gas, Hybrid, and Electric Versions of This Truck
We might be looking ahead a little bit, but the 2024 model year will be exciting for the Toyota Tacoma. The 2023 model continues to be an excellent truck to drive, but in 2024, we expect to see three variations of the Tacoma midsize truck.
What are the three expected variations of the 2024 Toyota Tacoma?

The 2024 model year opens a new generation for the Tacoma, and we should see three different models of this truck. There could be the traditional gasoline version, a hybrid powertrain, and the hotly anticipated Toyota Tacoma Electric. Not only will we see new powertrains, but there should also be a new platform for this truck.
Which powertrain could receive the hybrid treatment?

Non-EV versions of the new Tacoma will likely mean we have a turbocharged four-cylinder model that offers much more power than the current version and a hybrid V6. These changes could help this Toyota midsize truck stay competitive in the segment. We already see the Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon with three powertrains, but these two trucks haven’t taken on an EV platform yet.
What is the new Toyota Tacoma platform?

The next generation of the Tacoma midsize truck will use the TNGA-F platform. This is the Toyota modular platform which is also a body-on-frame build. This platform also underpins the new Lexus LX, Toyota Land Cruiser, Hilux, and 4Runner.
The modular versatility of this platform allows for a wide variety of powertrains, body styles, and suspension options. Experts tell us the new Tacoma could use the same base powertrain as the Lexus NX350. This powertrain is a 2.4-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine that makes 275 horsepower. A hybrid version of the 3.4-liter twin-turbo V6 is an interesting option as an upgrade for this midsize Toyota truck.
The expected transmissions of the new Tacoma include a six-speed manual and 10-speed automatic.
What should the Toyota Tacoma Electric offer?

The electric version of the Tacoma could have a pair of electric motors and be offered in AWD. This model could easily have a single-motor version that’s set up with RWD as the base model, but we’re not sure about that option yet.
What changes will we see across the board?

The new 2024 Toyota Tacoma comes with some changes. We know these trucks will no longer use a leaf-spring rear suspension and instead ride on coil springs. This should make the ride more pleasant on the road.
The hybrid and gasoline models should come in both extended and crew-cab models with the option of a short or long bed. The Tacoma Electric could start out in only the most popular configuration; crew-cab with a short bed.
Without the hybrid or electric powertrains, there are more than 30 possible configurations for the Toyota Tacoma. Toss in these new electrified models of this midsize truck, and the menu is much more extensive.
