The upcoming 2024 Ford Mustang will be a handful, but it has big shoes to fill with the outgoing S550-generation car. The previous generation of pony cars offered fuel-sipping four-cylinder EcoBoost powerplants, up to supercharged 5.2L Predator V8 engines. Still, the 2024 Ford Mustang promises to come in swinging, and it has the engines to do so. Here are the 2024 Ford Mustang engine options so far.

What engines will the 2024 Ford Mustang offer?

The entry-level EcoBoost powerplant returns for the 2024 Ford Mustang. The EcoBoost’s engine of choice remains the 2.3L turbocharged four-cylinder powerplant. However, you’ll have to double the cylinders if you want more horsepower in your new Mustang. Enter the 2024 Ford Mustang’s V8 engine offering: the venerable GT.

The new GT will carry over the tried and true Coyote 5.0L V8 engine. However, it will produce over 480 horsepower instead of the 460 in previous model years. Pair that power with a manual transmission and new Brembo brake options, and you’ve got a serious driver’s car. Finally, Ford unveiled the Dark Horse, a 500-horsepower, Coyote-powered, track-ready Mustang successor for the Shelby GT350 and Mach 1.

Are any of the 2024 Mustangs supercharged?

As of right now, none of the 2024 Ford Mustang engine options are supercharged. Further, none feature a hybridized application, either. Instead, the EcoBoost is turbocharged, and the new GT is naturally aspirated. Don’t fret, though; with over 480 horsepower, the upcoming GT is the most powerful in Ford’s history.

Of course, fans can rest easy based on the events of pony car history; a supercharged version is nearly a Thanos level of inevitability. Neither the S197 nor the S550 generation Mustangs went long without a library of supercharged Shelbys. As a result, Shelby will almost certainly give fans what they want: a supercharged seventh-generation Ford Mustang. After all, the last two Shelby GT500s were some of the fastest production muscle cars ever.

What engines did the outgoing S550 generation cars offer?

While the interior and exterior styling of the new S650 are an evolutionary step from the S550, that isn’t the case with engines. The 2024 Ford Mustang engine options look similar to the latest S550 generation cars. For instance, the latest S550 EcoBoost Mustangs offered a 310-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder engine, much like the new car. Also, the Coyote V8 is over 10 years into its tenure and finds itself in the new S650s, too.

Will the 2024 Ford Mustang have a manual transmission?

Fans can rejoice; the new 2024 Ford Mustang will offer a manual transmission. That’s a good thing because it would be too abrupt of a change to delete the manual option from Ford fans’ minds after rowing the Tremec transmission in the 2022 Ford Mustang Mach 1. At least for now, Mustang fans can still buy a new pony car with a V8 and a manual transmission. Better yet, it appears that the beloved Tremec manual transmission from the Shelby GT350 will live on in the sinister Ford Mustang Dark Horse.
