For our 2023 Ford Ranger vs. 2022 Chevy Colorado midsize truck comparison, we evaluated several different areas. This includes performance, efficiency, towing, off-road capabilities, technologies, and price.

Ranger vs. Colorado: Performance, efficiency, and towing

For performance, the 2023 Ford Ranger features a turbocharged 2.3-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder engine, which delivers 270 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque. Global versions of the Ranger will offer diesel engine options. However, diesel engines will unlikely be available for the U.S. version of the Ranger. 

In comparison, the 2022 Chevy Colorado offers three engine options: a base 2.5-liter four-cylinder (200-hp/191 lb-ft of torque), a 2.8-liter four-cylinder turbo-diesel (181 hp/369 lb-ft of torque), and a 3.6-liter V6 (308 hp/275 lb-ft of torque).

While the efficiency ratings of the 2023 Ranger are not yet available, they will likely be the same as the 2022 Ranger, given that it has the same engine. The estimated gas mileage of the 2022 Ranger is up to 21 city/26 highway mpg. In comparison, the Colorado has an estimated fuel economy of up to 20 city/30 highway mpg.

For towing, the Ranger and Colorado are fairly evenly matched. The Ranger is expected to have a maximum towing capacity of 7,500 pounds, while the Colorado can tow up to 7,600 pounds. 

Ranger vs. Colorado: Off-road capabilities

Both trucks boast impressive off-road capabilities. However, the Ranger has the edge, especially with the off-road-enhanced Tremor model, with features such as an off-road-tuned suspension and skid plates. Also, with its increased wheelbase and track width for the 2023 model year, the off-road capabilities of the Ranger are even better. Furthermore, the high-performance Ranger Raptor off-road truck will make its debut in 2022. 

Ranger vs. Colorado: Technologies

While we don’t yet know all of the technologies that the 2023 Ranger will have, Ford provided information about its new touchscreen. Buyers of the Ranger will have a choice of either a standard 10.1-inch touchscreen or an optional vertically-orientated 12.0-inch version. In comparison, the 2022 Colorado offers either a standard 7.0-inch touchscreen or an available 8.0-inch version.

Ranger vs. Colorado: Price

Which truck costs more: the 2023 Ranger or 2022 Colorado? Ford has not yet released the price information for the 2023 Ranger. However, given the redesign and new features, the 2023 Ranger will likely cost slightly more than the 2022 Ranger. The starting price for the 2022 Ranger is $25,285 MSRP for the Super Cab models and $27,685 MSRP for the SuperCrew models. In comparison, the starting price of the 2022 Colorado is $25,200 MSRP for the Extended Cab models and $27,100 MSRP for the Crew Cab models.

Advantages for the 2023 Ranger include base engine horsepower and torque, off-road capabilities, and infotainment system touchscreen size. For the 2022 Colorado, advantages include maximum horsepower and torque, as well as efficiency and price.
