With the introduction of the Mk7 version of the Volkswagen GTI, reviewers rated it pretty high in the small car, hatchback, and compact car segments. MotorTrend got behind the wheel of a 2022 GTI model – the European version – and shared their thoughts on it. How well did it perform? Was it worth it?

How well will the 2022 Volkswagen GTI perform?

MotorTrend reports that the 2022 model of the GTI is built on the same platform as the Mk7. So, if you thought the Mk7 handled well on the road, the new Volkswagen GTI will also impress you with its performance and handling. Especially with the MacPherson front suspension installed with a multilink rear suspension system, which Volkswagen adapted a few years earlier

Under the hood is the EA888 turbocharged 2.0-liter Inline-four engine that generates 242 hp and 273 lb-ft of torque, which is up from the previous 228-hp model. Combined with it will either be the six-speed manual or a seven-speed dual-clutch DSG transmission. With all components working together, it should get you a 6.3-second acceleration time for a 0 to 60 mph run as Volkswagen claims.

But, MotorTrend thinks that the acceleration time was underrated by Volkswagen, because an editor from MotorTrend, was able to turn out a 5.4-second time for the same 0 to 60 mph run. That beats out even the Mk7 by 0.6 seconds, using the dual-clutch transmission. The aluminum subframe and the 6.6 lbs shaved off the body, might contribute to the quicker time.

What features can we expect with it?

One feature that really accentuates the performance of the new GTI model, is its brakes. MotorTrend was more than impressed with how well these brakes responded with their tests, especially the 60 to 0 mph stops. The new GTI managed to come to a complete halt in only 104 feet. Also, they had to drive much faster than normal before they could feel any softness within the brakes, and that’s with the traction control systems on.

As far as the interior goes, it looks pretty futuristic, which is nice, but not always practical when driving. The touchscreen responds fine, but some items you might want to access are hidden behind levels of menus, like the traction control. You also won’t find any physical buttons even on the steering wheel, to control your favorite features.

The newest standard equipment for the 2022 GTI will be the automatic climate control system. As far as optional items go, the available leather seat covers will offer ventilation on top of the heated feature it has with the previous model.

What most people would probably like to know is how much they could expect to pay for the newer model of the GTI. At this time, no prices have been released, so no one can give an exact cost as of yet. But, looking at the 2020 model and the 2021 European version, we could figure out an estimated price.

For the base model, it’s possible to see around $31,000 as MotorTrend predicts. If you figure in the translated price of the Mk8, from previous models, in European to American currency it could go as high as $35,000. MotorTrend also felt that the new American model of the GTI with the same options as their tester vehicle could bring around $39,000.

If you look at the highest trim level for the 2020 GTI, you’ll see a starting price of $36,495. Add some optional features to it, and you’ll see the price increase to over $40,000. If the same pattern continues, you could see the Mk8 version arriving with a cost of $45,000 to $50,000.

The 2022 Volkswagen GTI promises to be a reliable vehicle with above-average performance. The wait time to get your hands on one will be worth it in the end.
