The Jeep Wrangler has played an essential role in American history. Travel has always been a defining part of American culture, and since 1986, the Wrangler SUV has been along for the ride. But with so many Jeep Wrangler options, which is the best? Read on to find out which models Edmunds recommends and why.

The 2022 Jeep Wrangler comes in 10 trim levels

Starting at $32,000 and topping out at over $76,000, the 2022 Jeep Wrangler comes in a whopping 10 trim levels. Among them are a two-door model, a four-door Wrangler Unlimited, and special editions such as the recently announced High Tide and Jeep Beach models.

That’s not all. There are also six powertrains, including a powerful V8 turbodiesel producing 470 hp, a mild and standard hybrid V6, and a plug-in hybrid.

The 2022 Jeep Rubicon 3.6-liter V6 hybrid trim is the top pick

Edmunds recommends the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon with the 3.6-liter V6 hybrid powertrain. This setup uses a mild-hybrid configuration known as eTorque, which includes an eight-speed automatic transmission and can achieve an EPA-estimated 21 mpg. With the new eTorque Mild Hybrid Technology, the Wrangler offers enhanced fuel economy and towing capabilities.

Some cool Rubicon add-ons include machined-finished black wheels with matching black over fenders and hardtop. Further customizable options include:

  • an integrated camera,
  • a Gorilla Glass windshield,
  • all-weather floor mats, and
  • a hardtop headliner that helps make the interior quieter.

Edmunds also suggests opting for the Cold Weather Group for spring and fall open-top driving. The LED Lighting Group and the Safety Group for blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are also attractive options. All of those options push the price of a fully equipped Rubicon to $56,375.

Edmunds calls the 2022 Jeep Wrangler Sahara a runner-up

The 2022 Jeep Wrangler Sahara is perfect for drivers with no intentions of venturing far off-road. In fact, new and old Jeep owners alike will be pleased with the comfort, versatility, and convenience of driving this SUV daily.

Owning a Jeep doesn’t have to be complicated, either. Edmunds notes Jeep designed Wrangler Selec-Trac to engage 4WD (in high range) automatically if it encounters slippery surfaces. You can also customize it to improve your overall driving experience.

With its exclusive Sky One-Touch power-operated top, you’ll never again have to struggle with opening the top when you want the wind blowing through your hair. Adding a Gorilla Glass windshield along with leather seats will also add to the overall look and ruggedness of the Jeep Sahara.

Adding cold weather, advanced safety, and LED lighting packages pushes the price to about $56,800.

Last but not least is the 2022 Jeep Wrangler Willys

Of the three 2022 Jeep Wrangler models Edmunds recommends, the Willys is a no-frills choice. Although many consumers who buy a Wrangler do so because of the emotion it evokes, prices for even basic models can exceed $50,000.

The Willys Sport is an excellent option for a bit more than the base Wrangler. Edmunds notes upgrades such as black alloy wheels; 32-inch mud-terrain tires; a Trac-Lok limited-slip rear differential; heavy-duty shocks, Rubicon rock rails; a blacked-out grille, bumper trim, and badges; and a sassy “Four-Wheel Drive” decal. The Willys Sport also has all-weather floor mats and tinted rear windows.

But this beloved SUV isn’t the best for every driver

Despite its avid fan base, not everyone would enjoy driving a Jeep Wrangler. Noisy cabins and clumsy handling can make this SUV uncomfortable. The Wrangler appeals to a specific audience and stays true to what it’s supposed to be. And with its removable top, riders can feel the sun and wind in this go-anywhere off-roader.
