On some lists of the best large SUVs, only a select few models often finish near the top. For example, the 2022 Ford Expedition and the 2022 Chevy Tahoe are commonly the highest-rated models in their class. Why do these large SUVs often outrank the competition?

For the 2022 model year, outlets like Kelley Blue Book reviewed a few different large SUV models. Furthermore, judging based on things like price, resale value, powertrain, interior, and a thorough road test, the results speak for themselves. For KBB’s list of best large SUVs in 2022, the Ford Expedition/Expedition MAX and Chevrolet Tahoe exceeded expectations.

Other models didn’t live up to expectations. The Nissan Armada, Chevrolet Suburban, GMC Yukon XL, and GMC Yukon fell behind the two best options. Each of these models lost points for various reasons. For example, the Chevy and GMC large SUVs make it difficult to get certain driver aids, have poor handling, or even aren’t as comfortable inside as an expensive model should be.

It’s hard not to love the Ford Expedition

Firstly, KBB’s top-ranked large SUV is the 2022 Ford Expedition. Starting at $52,075, it’s one of the cheaper options in its class. In addition, it’s been more reliable for previous model year owners than many other large SUVs. However, that’s not all the publication loves about its best full-size SUV of 2022.

The reviewer likes the 2022 Ford Expedition for a few different reasons. One is that it accelerates well using its three different available engines, including the base 375-horsepower 3.5-liter V6 turbo. Next, the interior is spacious and quiet while driving. One of the most critical parts of any SUV is the interior’s roominess, and Ford’s large offering provides plenty. Although its massive size comes as a negative, it’s pretty much impossible to find a three-row large SUV without that issue.

Don’t sleep on the 2022 Chevy Tahoe

Even for other outlets, like MotorTrend, the Ford Expedition is in the top three large SUVs. Just like with KBB, only one other large SUV came close to scoring as high as the popular Ford. For 2022, it’s the Chevy Tahoe starting at $56,095. Like Ford’s, the Chevrolet SUV received high marks for its spacious cabin and engine lineup. Additionally, the standard wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto isn’t bad either.

Next, the reviewer enjoyed its time driving the Chevy Tahoe. Although it offers a Magnetic Ride Control suspension or an adaptive air suspension, the regular version is comfortable enough for the average driver. Both V8 engines feel powerful enough to handle what lies ahead. Finally, adding four-wheel drive and a low-range transfer case with the Z71 trim makes off-roading a cinch.

The best 2 large SUVs for 2022

In conclusion, there are only two large SUVs that outrank the others. If you’re in the market for a new model, the 2022 Ford Expedition and 2022 Chevy Tahoe are excellent choices. Other options in the segment are expensive with reliability issues, a lack of comfort, and other problems. However, the Expedition and Tahoe are versatile, spacious, capable, and mostly reliable. That’s why the pair was able to outrank the competition, according to multiple reviewers.
