Many publications produce their own version of a best vehicles list every year. For iSeeCars, the best midsize SUVs for 2022 feature many models from many different automakers. One of the most popular automakers is Ford, which offers two models in the midsize SUV segment. The Ford Explorer made the top 5 in its class, the Ford Edge, however, fell short. What makes one Ford midsize SUV a top 5 model but not the other?

According to iSeeCars, the Ford Explorer is a top 5 model in the midsize SUV segment. Finishing fifth out of 16 reviewed models, it’s one of the best money can buy. iSC loves it for its passenger space, advanced 4×4 all-wheel drive system, and class-leading engines. Plus, the Explorer offers a hybrid powertrain, meaning it can get better fuel economy than many of its closest competitors. The Explorer also earned an IIHS Top Safety Pick Plus award, the industry’s highest safety standard award. As a result, iSC gave it a perfect 10/10 for safety.

Additionally, value retention and reliability aren’t bad either. Explorers don’t retain value exceptionally well, but better than many, earning a 7.4/10 in this category. Similarly, iSC gave it an 8.4 out of 10 for reliability. Older Explorers were known for being problematic, but modern models have widely solved those issues.

The Ford Edge isn’t in the top 10 best midsize SUVs

Unlike the Explorer, the Ford Edge midsize SUV is not a top 5 midsize SUV. In fact, it’s not even a top 10 midsize SUV, as it finished at number 12 overall. Although the publication loves the Edge’s excellent ST performance trim, impressive safety tech for low models, and roomy interior, the Edge has some problems.

One of the most common problems iSC has with midsize SUVs is a lack of a hybrid or electric powertrain. Although many models are just getting green options, no engine with better fuel economy is available for the Ford Edge. Without one of these options, the Edge’s poor fuel economy makes it less desirable for many buyers.

Additionally, iSC says it’s overdue for a redesign, and we tend to agree. The midsize SUV still looks the same as it did after the most recent redesign in 2015. We expect a full redesign to come in the next few years. Until then, the overall look of the Edge is dull, boring, and outdated.

Another of the best reasons to buy or not buy a vehicle is the cost. Many buyers are turned off by something that costs too much, regardless of what the model offers to owners. The Ford midsize SUVs are a clear indicator as the Explorer gets the higher ranking. The better of the two models starts at $35,510, while the outside-the-top-10 Edge starts at $37,945. Although more costly Explorer trims exceed any version of the smaller Edge SUV, the base model’s starting price being so high is negative.

In conclusion, one Ford midsize SUV is a top 5 model, according to iSeeCars. The Ford Explorer is one of the five best models in its class. However, the Ford Edge fell short, finishing outside the top 10 overall. With such a big difference in ranking, it’s clear iSC believes the Explorer is a much better option from the Ford SUV lineup.
