Auto manufacturers are embracing electric vehicles (EVs) as the way of the future, and more and more EVs are entering the market. These EV options continue to get more accessible and affordable for drivers, but currently, only one electric SUV has a price tag of less than $30,000. Here’s a look at the 2023 Chevrolet Bolt EUV, along with some other available options.

Compact and affordable electric SUVs

The 2023 Chevy Bolt EUV is the only electric SUV sold for under $30,000, but there are other affordable competitors. The 2023 Hyundai Ioniq 5 has a starting price of $41,450. It gets 110 MPGe and has a range of 220 miles. Additionally, there are options for a larger battery and also for all-wheel drive.

The 2023 Kia Niro EV has a starting price of $39,450. It gets 112 MPGe and has a range of 239 miles. Its 64-kWh battery powers the electric motor. Car and Driver proclaims that it “offers considerable range, space, and style for a fair price.” The 2023 Volkswagen ID.4 has a starting price of $37,495. It gets 107 MPGe and has a range of 275 miles. The base trim has a 62-kWh battery, and higher trims have an 82-kWh battery. All-wheel drive is available, but adding the second motor does reduce the range (and increase the cost).

The 2023 Hyundai Kona Electric is smaller than the Ioniq 5 and starts at $33,550. It gets 120 MPGe and has a range of 258 miles. All-wheel drive isn’t an option on the Kona Electric. Lastly, while the 2022 Mazda MX-30 does have a starting price of $33,470, it’s only sold in California, has a tepid driving range of only 100 miles, and is currently sold out.

The Chevrolet Bolt EUV had a price reduction for the 2023 model year, starting at $27,200. However, it’s worth noting that Chevrolet EVs are not eligible for the $7,500 federal tax credit that some other brands can claim.

The Bolt EUV gets 115 MPGe and has a range of 247 miles. It has a 65-kWh battery pack that takes about 7.5 hours to charge from 0 to 100% when using a 240V charger, says Edmunds. The Bolt EUV has a front-mounted electric motor that generates 200 hp.

Its available features include a sunroof and GM’s Super Cruise hands-free driver-assistance systeM. In terms of its design, Car and Driver says the “Bolt EUV strives to be as conventional and non-threatening as a small electric SUV can be, and it largely succeeds.” Opting for the higher of the two trim options will increase the starting price to $32,695. The Bolt EUV then gains leather upholstery, heated and ventilated power-adjustable front seats, as well as adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and blind-spot monitoring.

The smaller 2023 Chevrolet Bolt EV

The Chevrolet Bolt EUV is 6.3 inches longer than the Chevy Bolt EV and 0.2 inches wider and taller. The Bolt EV loses most of this space in the second-row legroom. The 2023 Chevrolet Bolt EV, a hatchback, has a starting price of $25,600, making it the lowest-priced EV currently sold in the United States, says Car and Driver.

The Bolt EV gets 120 MPGe and has a range of 259 miles. It has a 65-kWh battery pack, and its electric motor produces 200 hp. Its second trim starts at $29,795 and provides a heated steering wheel, heated leather seats, a 360-degree camera, and extra advanced safety features.

Buyers looking for an electric and affordable SUV will be happy with the 2023 Chevrolet Bolt EUV, while those looking for a hatchback will like the Chevy Bolt EV.
