One of the transitional steps toward an electric vehicle (E)V future will be plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs). That’s because they provide a balance of specs and features while being relatively clean. Many automakers have at least one PHEV model in their lineup, but one automaker, in particular, is ahead of the pack as it has five PHEVs available right now. Here’s a look at Volvo, the only automaker with five PHEVs in its lineup right now.

This is what a PHEV is

A PHEV is supposed to be a transition point between regular hybrids and full-on EVs. Like a regular hybrid, a PHEV has a gas-powered engine, but like an EV, a PHEV also has the ability to travel in battery-only mode.

That allows PHEVs to strike a good balance in terms of practicality. It can save drivers a lot of money on short errands, as drivers can take that trip on battery-only mode, thus meaning they don’t have to pay for gas. As for longer trips, drivers can drive in hybrid mode, so they won’t have to worry about running out of electricity and recharging. According to EV Adoption, only Volvo currently has five PHEVs on the market.
