Massachusetts woodpecker damages 25 cars
A vandal in Rockport, Massachusetts has been described by witnesses as being 18 to 24 inches tall. He’s dressed in black and white, with a red hat. The culprit is a crow-sized pilated woodpecker.
You can’t exactly call the police on a bird, but residents wish they could. This woodpecker has been targeting vehicles with his sharp beak. Multiple people have seen him pecking their trucks, SUVs, and even RVs.
The woodpecker has been breaking windshields, mirrors, and windows. Perhaps he wants to protect the Earth from pollution or save other animals in the neighborhood.
But in reality, as he whacks away at cars, he might be confused. He typically lands on the windshield wipers of trucks and attacks his reflection.
According to NBC News, the woodpecker could be experiencing aggressive behavior due to mating season. As a result, he could be acting out with an aggressive territorial courtship display. It could be mistaking its reflection for a competitor.
Woodpeckers peck with a force of about 1,200 to 1,4000 g-forces. It only takes 60 to 100 g-forces to cause a human concussion. They can pack about 20 times per second. Meaning they can attack cars with the force of miniature jackhammers.
Hopefully, the SUVs and other vehicles in town are covered by insurance. But even if it’s free, having glass replaced is inconvenient.
