The world waited for the redesigned 2024 Ford Ranger and Ranger Raptor, unveiled last year. This midsize pickup truck wears a highly-respected name that’s been part of the truck market for generations, but this new model is more exciting than before.

One engine worked for the Ranger, but it’s getting old

When the Ford Ranger returned to the North American market, it came with only one powertrain. This was during a time when the GM pair of midsize trucks had three powertrain options. The 2019 Ford Ranger hit the market and proved to be a highly competitive truck in the class, but this single-powertrain option is getting old.

Enter the new 2024 Ford Ranger.

How many powertrains does the 2024 Ford Ranger offer?

This new generation Ranger comes with three distinct powertrains, providing a trio of excellent choices for your drive. The EPA fuel mileage figures were revealed and shared by Ford Authority recently.

The three Ranger powertrain specs are:

2.3-liter EcoBoost 4-cylinder

270 horsepower, 315 lb-ft of torque

21 city/25 hwy mpg (RWD), 20 city/24 hwy mpg (4WD)

2.7-liter EcoBoost V6

315 horsepower, 400 lb-ft of torque

19 city/23 hwy mpg (4WD)

3.0-liter EcoBoost V6 (Raptor Only)

405 horsepower, 430 lb-ft of torque

16 city/18 hwy mpg (4WD)

The base fuel mileage figures for the RWD Ranger dropped by one mpg on the highway compared to the previous generation. This could be the result of more equipment in this midsize truck.

Can the new Ranger still tow a heavy load?

The 7,500-pound towing capacity of the previous generation Ranger was one of the qualities that made this truck appealing to many drivers. The new 2024 model retains this towing figure, making the Ranger one of the top midsize trucks for towing.

The change in capability for the 2024 Ford Ranger is found in its max payload figure. The new model drops from 1,905 pounds to 1,805 pounds. This should still be enough for most drivers to carry as much gear as necessary for their adventures.

The reconfigured Ford Ranger truck bed

The new Ranger uses a modified version of the previous frame, adding about two inches to the wheelbase, which translates to improved cabin space. In addition to a reconfigured cabin, the Ranger has a newly configured bed.

The short version of the Ranger’s truck bed is shorter than before, measuring 59.6 inches compared to 61.0 inches. The 2024 Ranger’s bed is 48.2 inches wide between the wheel wells compared to 44.8 inches in the previous model. This means drivers can carry 4-foot wide sheets of plywood flat on the bed floor.

With two new powertrains, an improved configuration, and impressive capability figures, the 2024 Ford Ranger has more desirable qualities than before. With the release of the fuel mileage figures, we could see new Rangers on the road every day.
