‘Reported myself,’ Turkey’s transport minister posts 140 mph selfie, gets ticket
Turkey’s minister of transportation–Abdulkadir Uraloglu–might be watching too much Fast and Furious, or perhaps the new Formula 1 movie. He recently posted a video of him jamming out to his tunes while jamming down the highway at 140 mph. No, that’s not in kilometers–or a typo. He was nearing twice the legal speed limit.
The wild part is that Uraloglu posted the self-incriminating video to X (formerly Twitter). He seems to be having a grand old time blasting along the highway near the capital of Ankara in his Audi crossover. The politician is jamming out to folk songs and even listening to clips from speeches by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. He even dropped the cheeky hashtag: #TurkeyAccelerates.
There’s just the problem of the speedometer, clearly visible in the over-the-shoulder shots.
That speedometer topped out at 224 km/hour, or 140 mph. In the various clips it ranged from 118 to 140 mph. That highway’s speed limits is 85 mph. You’d think the minister of transportation would know that. Or at least his media team that was taking and posting his videos.
Turkey’s transportation minister admits I ‘denounced myself’
Of course commenters noticed. Did Uraloglu try to cover the whole thing up? Nope. This baller RE-POSTED THE VIDEO! But this time his caption was, “I have essentially reported myself.”
Can you taunt the transportation department when you are the transportation department? Apparently.
He explained. “I took to the wheel to check the Ankara-Nigde highway and unintentionally exceeded the speed limit for a short period. With the video I effectively denounced myself.”
That’s not all, he included a photo of his penalty notice. His fine for going 140 mph? Roughly $225. Not too shabby.
Uraloglu is urging his country to do as he says, not as he does. “I would like to inform the public that I will be much more careful from now on…Sticking to the speed limited is mandatory for everyone.”
