On June 12, semi-trucker Zack Hatcher recently experienced every driver’s nightmare. He was in Bartow County, Georgia, about an hour from Atlanta, when his truck stalled at a railroad crossing. Zack soon realized that not only was his 18-wheeler inoperable, but there was a train coming quickly.

A witness started recording the event. The footage shows Hatcher opening the left front door and hopping out. After a mere moment, the train smashes into the semi-truck, and we lose sight of Hatcher.

Per ABC News, this is the eighth documented incident at the crossing since 2017. This time, while operators could see the truck ahead of impact, it was simply too late to stop the train.

The witness waited for the train to stop and for debris to settle before crossing between two train cars to check on Hatcher. Somehow, Hatcher had moved off the tracks just in time, and he was uninjured. In a split-second decision, Hatcher miraculously chose to run in the correct direction. He went ahead of his rig in the same direction he had been driving. Had he gone the other way, the train would have knocked the truck and debris into his path.

If you find yourself in a similar predicament, make safety your priority. Don’t sit in the car; clear yourself and any passengers well away from the tracks. Call 911 to notify authorities of the blocked crossing. Once the scene is safe, handle the car, which typically means arranging for a tow. Don’t attempt to push the vehicle unless you’re sure there aren’t any oncoming trains.
