A mother who shares money tips and other life hacks on TikTok recently discovered a way to save serious bank buying new tires. This works for Costco members interested in rubber from Discount Tire.

@PieAndPrayer explains she was in the Discount Tire waiting room, browsing various alternative options on her phone.

She overheard a salesman chatting with a couple “reluctant to get tires right then.” He reportedly asked them, “‘You going to go to Costco?’ And she’s like, ‘I don’t know, maybe.’ He goes, ‘We will waive the installation fee since they waived the installation fee, we will match that.’”

The couple in question still didn’t buy tires. But our TikToker did. “So I got up there and I said, ‘I heard what you said to the other couple and I have a Costco card.’ So I pulled it out and he goes, ‘All right,’ and waived the price of installation, which saved a lot of money because they charge per tire.”

I’ll add that the TikToker was lucky to overhear the sales pitch from the couple “on the fence.” But many salespeople have the authority to waive fees such as installation to close a deal.

If you are considering an alternative to a regular store or shop—such as your local Costco—just because it’s cheaper, tell the salesperson. They may match the price and save you a trip. The worst they can say is “no,” and they’ll probably appreciate the honesty.
