Mazda recalled 13,857 CX-30 models due to a problem with the vehicle’s liftgate that may cause injury.

According to a Mazda press release, some 2020-2021 CX-30s were constructed with a defect. The liftgate may unexpectedly lower when in the upright position while the crossover is parked on an incline.

The issue stems from a problem with the drive motor and spring support of the power liftgate. Oddly enough, Mazda said this situation is only likely to occur in “high ambient temperatures.”

The manufacturer claims that no one has reported any injuries or accidents due to this problem. Regardless, owners should be careful while standing underneath the liftgate until the recall is fixed. 

Has Mazda ever recalled the 2020-2021 CX-30 before?

Yes, the Japanese manufacturer recalled the CX-30 for more severe issues. So it’s no wonder why some feel that the CX-30 doesn’t live up to Mazda’s reliability standards.

The most frightening problem dealt with a potential fire hazard on 2020 CX-30s equipped with all-wheel drive. This issue stemmed from a possible disconnected evaporative vent hose on the fuel system.

The NHTSA also recalled the 2021 Mazda CX-30 for a tire air valve leaking issue on Feb. 22, 2021.

However, you shouldn’t have too many reasons for concern. The government-backed organization awarded the CX-30 a five-star overall safety rating.

Notably, other models experience recalls on a much more frequent basis. For example, the NHTSA infamously recalled the 2020 Ford Explorer 10 times – and counting. So, 2020-2021 CX-30 owners shouldn’t be quick to ditch their crossover for another option.

Here’s what you should do if your CX-30 is affected

Unfortunately, models aren’t always immediately repaired after a manufacturer announces a recall. However, you shouldn’t have to wait too long for a plan of action to have this defect remedied.

According to CNET, Mazda will alert those who are affected by the recall via mail by April 19. The publication also stated that owners will have to bring their 2020-2021 CX-30 to a Mazda dealership. 

There, a service technician will install new liftgate control modules that feature updated software. Parts may be replaced if necessary.
