Is $70,000 too much to pay for a midsize pickup truck? The new 2024 GMC Canyon AT4X AEV Edition comes extremely close to this figure. Like the Chevy Colorado ZR2 Bison, the Canyon AT4X AEV is a specialized truck with hardcore off-road packaging and equipment to put this pickup on top of the market as the most capable midsize truck available. Let’s see what this GMC Canyon brings to the table.

What does AEV mean for the 2024 GMC Canyon AT4X?

AEV stands for American Expedition Vehicles, a tuner company partnering with GM to provide upgrades and hardcore off-road equipment for some GMC trucks. The Sierra AT4X AEV is an incredible half-ton truck and GMC gave AEV a crack at the Canyon to create similar functionality in the midsize pickup.

The AT4X AEV Edition includes a comprehensive package of integrated AEV hardware aimed at off-road driving and overland experiences. According to GMC, equipment from AEV is built with advanced and innovative engineering to deliver high-quality performance to improve the truck’s look, functionality, and drivability on highways and trails.

Top-notch off-road gear for the Canyon AT4X AEV Edition

This all-new GMC pickup for 2024 brings a full package of specialized off-road equipment as part of the standard equipment, making the Canyon more capable on the trails. The AEV Edition equipment includes:

  • Boron steel skid plates
  • Steel bumpers
  • Special wheels
  • 35-inch off-road tires
  • Dual lockers
  • Rock sliders
  • Optional hydraulic jounce stops

Does the AEV Edition improve the off-road angles?

The GMC Canyon AT4X falls short of the Chevy Colorado ZR2 in terms of off-road angles. That changes when the AEV Edition package is part of the mix. With the special AEV steel bumpers included, the Canyon’s approach angle improves from 36.9 degrees to 38.2 degrees, and the departure angle improves from 25.0 degrees to 26.0 degrees.

A bit of AEV styling makes its way to the cabin

While the main focus of the 2024 GMC Canyon AT4X AEV Edition is to be the most hardcore and capable off-road midsize truck, the interior features some AEV items. The seats include AEV embroidered badging on the head restraints, giving a slight nod to the AEV qualities.

This midsize truck also features AEV markings on the exterior badges on the lower left of the tailgate and the letters A-E-V stamped in the bumpers.

What powers the 2024 GMC Canyon AT4X AEV Edition truck?

AEV didn’t change the Canyon’s powertrain for this special edition truck. The powertrain of every GMC Canyon is a 2.7-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine attached to an 8-speed automatic transmission. This powertrain delivers 310 horsepower and 430 lb-ft of torque. This power is sent to all four wheels for serious trail-riding fun.
