Firefighters with the Ross-Augusta Fire Department responded to reports of a fire that was started by Mother Nature.Lightning struck a man’s truck while he was waiting for a severe storm to end in a parking lot.
He was surprised by blast. The flash of lightning hit his antenna, causing the radio to go out. It’sa good thing that the man was already pulled over, because smoke started billowing out of the hood.
The driver popped the hood of his Ford F-150 and saw that there was a fire near the battery. But he didn’t have time to react. All he could do was jump away from the truck as it erupted into flames.
According to Fox 2 Detroit, firefighters shared that it took time to get the blaze under control. It’s unclear if the F-150 started leaking fuel or other flammable materials.
Luckily, the driver was unharmed as the situation could have been much worse. The chief mentioned that he’s never seen anything like this during his 37 years with the department.
Hard-topped vehicles with an outer metal shell protect passengers from lightning as long as the windows are rolled up. Lightning will pass through the metal, through the tires, to the ground.
Common damage includes damage to the antenna, electrical system, rear windshield, and tires. You may see a small explosion with sparks and metal fragments upon impact.
