In a painful and bizarre Florida beach accident, 33-year-old Coleson Janey is recovering in the hospital after a Jeep Wrangler ran over him while he was lying face down on the sand.

The crash happened Saturday morning in Volusia County, Florida. Deputies say a 61-year-old woman backed her Jeep off the beach driving lane into a parking spot and ran over Janey.

“I was just screaming,” Janey told WESH 2. “Screaming my head off, screaming bloody murder, of course, because I was just in so much pain.”

He suffered serious injuries, including broken bones. “Now I have a forearm that’s broken in two places,” he said. “Both bones in the forearm, clean break. And then my femur, which was broken, that they just had to put a titanium rod in yesterday.”

A 911 caller described the scene, saying, “The guy’s alive. He’s moaning very badly.”

Janey’s aunt, Ronda Storms, said the ambulance crew had trouble reaching him. “That EMS vehicle was stuck multiple times in the sand getting to my nephew,” she explained. Storms also claimed that when they loaded him into the ambulance, the splint stabilizing unit broke, we’re assuming from the rough ride. Ouch.

Let’s break down the vehicle side of this.

Since 2018, all Jeep Wranglers come standard with backup cameras due to federal rules

However, not all Wranglers include rear object sensors, and those tall, rugged vehicles have major blind spots. Beach parking brings extra hazards, like reflective sand, poor sightlines, and — as this case shows — people lying flat where drivers might not expect them.

Deputies cited the Jeep driver for careless driving. The victim’s aunt isn’t happy with the charge. She said on record that she wanted the Wrangler driver labelled with reckless driving, not the less serious “careless.”
