The Honda HR-V hasn’t exactly been a hit among consumers. The crossover has failed to impress buyers and critics alike, especially since there are better crossovers on the market. An electric 2022 Honda HR-V was just unveiled in China. Will an electric HR-V be any better?

The 2022 Honda HR-V just got electrified

According to Motor1, an electric version of a Honda HR-V was unveiled in China. This is exciting news considering Honda’s lack of vehicles in the electric vehicle space. After the colossal failure of the Honda Clarity EV, consumers didn’t plan on seeing another electric Honda anytime soon.

The upcoming Honda Prologue battery-electric SUV is slated for 2024. Honda is collaborating with General Motors to develop the EV, but after the recent Chevy Bolt debacle, Honda’s electric future is uncertain. A Honda EV of any model is a shock, but the HR-V is puzzling.

The Honda HR-V hasn’t performed well in the American market because of its ride quality and lack of power. It does have great cargo space for its size, which would drive sales in countries that favor small spacious vehicles. The HR-V may not be great as is, but an electric version could be promising. Motors could help provide more oomph than the HR-V’s weak 141 horsepower. The electric Honda HR-V is expected to make 201 horsepower.

There’s no telling whether or not America will get an electric HR-V, but a new powertrain would add some much-needed excitement to the crossover. Honda has plenty of heavy hitters in its lineup, including the Civic, Accord, CR-V, and Odyssey, and the HR-V just doesn’t seem to fit in.

How much does the 2022 Honda HR-V cost?

The 2022 Honda HR-V starts at $21,420. It is available in four different trims. The base model is the only trim that doesn’t include active noise cancellation. Engine and road noise have been one of the HR-V’s many issues.

The Honda HR-V is also notorious for having uncomfortable seats. Only the final trim, the EX-L, includes leather-trimmed seats for added comfort. The HR-V EX-L starts at $26,220. For that price, consumers can buy a Honda CR-V LX and have money to spare.

The Honda HR-V offers plenty of cargo space, great fuel economy, and a refined cabin, but its lack of power is disappointing. Not every Honda model can accelerate the way the Accord does, but the Japanese automaker is known for peppy powertrains. The HR-V’s engine feels sluggish, and that alienates it from the rest of the lineup.

The 2022 Honda HR-V could be a great crossover if it had more zip to it. It doesn’t provide enough value to consumers for its price. The HR-V doesn’t stand a chance against competitors like the Hyundai Kona and Mazda CX-30.
