Are you shopping for a new midsize pickup truck? The segment of vehicles is filled with excellent options, all of which have different engines. Like many others, the 2022 Chevy Colorado has a few different engines to choose from. Moreover, some people only want a pickup with a V8 engine under the hood. Does the 2022 Chevy Colorado have a V8?

Firstly, the 2022 Chevy Colorado base model is the WT trim. Starting at $28,295, it houses a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine under the hood. The base engine produces 200 horsepower and 191 lb-ft of torque and is paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. In addition, rear-wheel drive is standard for the lowest model.

According to Edmunds, opting for the lowest trim uses an extended cab, which always uses the same engine. The midsize truck’s base engine is decent, but most experts recommend upgrading to a better version. It doesn’t have the speed, torque, or, as a result, power that most truck owners would like. However, for under $30,000, the Colorado base model is an excellent option for anyone on a budget.

Alternatively, the Crew Cab comes with a 3.6-liter V6 engine. As a result, owners get 308 horsepower and 275 lb-ft of torque, far exceeding the extended cab version. All-wheel drive is also an available option for either version.

Colorado engine upgrades

One step up from the base model is the 2022 Chevy Colorado LT. The extended cab version of the pickup truck comes with your choice of a four-cylinder or V6 engine. Additionally, crew cab variations come with the V6 or a 2.8-liter four-cylinder diesel engine, producing 181 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque.

Next, for the Colorado Z71 trim level, the extended cab gets the V6 engine. However, crew cabs come with the V6 and diesel engines, whichever the buyer prefers. Since the Z71 and the next highest ZR2 trim level are off-road-focused, more power might be valuable.

For the genuine off-roader, the Colorado ZR2 is only available in the extended and crew cab short bed versions. The V6 and diesel engines are also options at this trim level. Off-roading is easily doable with the available engines, but unfortunately, there aren’t any more upgrades.

The 2022 Chevy Colorado does not have a V8

Unfortunately, the 2022 Chevy Colorado does not have a V8 engine. From 2009 to 2012, Chevy’s midsize truck came with a 5.3-liter V8 for some trim levels. As a result, it made 300 horsepower and 320 lb-ft of torque. However, looking at the fuel economy will help ease the pain of it missing from the modern lineup. In 2009, fueleconomy.gov says the pickup truck with a V8 under the hood averaged 14 city and 19 highway mpg with all-wheel drive.

Currently, gas costs $5 or more per gallon, so the available engines are much better options. Even with four-wheel drive and the V6 engine, Colorados have an EPA estimated 19 mpg combined. 17 city and 24 highway are much better than the V8 version from years ago. Experts like Car and Driver recommend opting for the V6 engine, which improves performance and ride tremendously.
