If you’re looking for a view of the sun and sky without buying a convertible, you may be looking for a vehicle with a panoramic sunroof. The sunroof (without glass) first arrived in 1937 but didn’t really become popular in the U.S. until the 1960s and 1970s. The moonroof (with glass) joined the party in 1973. Today’s large panoramic sunroofs are a type of moonroof and have a very large glass area. They’re most common in SUVs, but is one available in the 2021 Mazda CX-5?

The 2021 Mazda CX-5

U.S. News rates the 2021 Mazda CX-5 first among compact SUVs. It earns this place with what U.S. News calls “its engaging handling and refined interior.” It described the CX-5 as one of the most fun to drive in its class. Its only negative is a small cargo area.

The CX-5 has two engine options: a naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine, generating 187 hp and a turbocharged four-cylinder engine, generating 227 hp with regular gas or 250 hp with premium gas. Both provide a good amount of power. The turbocharged engine is available in the Carbon Edition and standard in the Grand Touring Reserve and Signature trims. Front-wheel drive is standard, but all-wheel drive is available.

The 2021 CX-5 also has plenty of standard features and a great score for safety. Its list of standard advanced safety features includes automatic high-beam headlights, adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, forward automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, lane keep assist, lane departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, a rearview camera, and rain-sensing windshield wipers.

Available safety features include driver attention monitoring, a surround-view parking camera system, a head-up display, adaptive headlights, reverse automatic emergency braking, front and rear parking sensors, and traffic sign recognition.

A few features are new for the 2021 model year, including a standard 10.25-inch touchscreen for a new infotainment system. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility now come standard. Mazda Connected Services, Bluetooth, a Wi-Fi hotspot, a four-speaker stereo system, HD Radio, and two USB ports are also standard. Available tech features include navigation, a six-speaker stereo system, a 10-speaker audio system, satellite radio, and two rear USB ports.

Unfortunately, the 2021 Mazda CX-5 does not have an available panoramic sunroof. The good news is that a moonroof is available on most of its trim levels. Mazda describes the moonroof in the 2021 CX-5 as a “power sliding-glass moonroof with one-touch-open feature and interior sunshade.”

There are six trim levels for buyers to choose from – Sport, Touring, Carbon Edition, Grand Touring, Grand Touring Reserve, and Signature. The Sport trim does not offer a moonroof. One is available on the Touring trim as part of a $1,445 package. The moonroof comes standard on the remaining four trims.

Luxurious features in the 2021 Mazda CX-5

The 2021 Mazda CX-5 has a luxury feel in its cabin space, with high-quality materials on all surfaces. The Sport trim provides a push-button start plus a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob. The Touring trim adds synthetic leather upholstery, heated front seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, a rear center armrest, and proximity keyless entry. It has an available package with additional features, including leather upholstery, an eight-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, a six-way power-adjustable passenger seat, and a power liftgate.

The package also includes a universal garage door opener and an auto-dimming rearview mirror. The Carbon Edition, new for 2021, matches the Touring trim and its available package, but it has its own paint color and has red leather upholstery and its own design for the wheels and interior trim.

The Grand Touring trim comes with leather upholstery plus satellite radio, a 10-speaker Bose stereo, a 7-inch digital gauge cluster, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, a universal garage door opener, a power liftgate, fog lights, and heated outside mirrors. An available package includes ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, a heated steering wheel, and a head-up display.

The Grand Touring Reserve comes standard with the Grand Touring’s available package. It also has available navigation and traffic sign recognition. Signature is the top trim, and it provides Nappa leather upholstery and wood interior trim, something that’s unusual for this class. It also has ambient interior lighting, navigation, and additional advanced safety features.

The 2021 Mazda CX-5 has a starting price of $25,370, and the top trim starts at $37,505. It comes with plenty of performance, luxury, and standard features, but buyers looking for a moonroof will want to skip the base trim. Buyers looking for a panoramic sunroof may want to skip the 2021 Mazda CX-5 entirely since it doesn’t offer one.
