Oh no, did we get sent back to 2020? A massive semiconductor shortage led to massive truck and SUV delays, increasing prices. Honestly, it feels like we never fully recovered. Now shortages of items like aluminum and chips are causing delays again.

Aluminum and chip shortages delay truck and SUV production

Oh geez, there’s a massive semiconductor chip shortage looming. This is a deja vu that I would like to skip. However, the shortage of chips from Nexperia is already hurting truck and SUV production.

According to Investing, Nissan is cutting production of the Rogue due to a shortage of chips. The Rogue was the brand’s best-selling SUV in America in 2024. Decreasing output to about 900 models a week could have a massive impact overall.

Popular Honda models could be hurting as well. Nexperia supplies chips for the models Honda builds for the North American market. As a result, it suspended operations at its Celaya plant in Mexico.

This is where the Honda HR-V is built. It’s the brand’s best-selling model in Mexico. It could be conserving its supply for more popular American models like the CR-V. Volkswagen, Stellantis, Toyota, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz also rely on Nexperia for chips.

Also, the aluminum shortage is related to a fire at the New York Nolevis aluminum plant. It supplies 40% of the aluminum sheet used by automakers. Ford, Stellantis, Toyota, General Motors, Hyundai, BMW, Volkswagen, Volvo, Tesla, and Jaguar Land Rover.

Ford has been reducing production for the F-150 Lightning, Expedition, and Lincoln navigator to save its supply for the Ford F-150. Jeep has reduced production of the Jeep Grand Wagoneer.

This is only the beginning as new tariffs and such take effect. Hopefully, things won’t get worse.
