Some automakers are lucky to win any safety awards, let alone a variety of awards. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) awarded Volvo more Top Safety Pick Plus awards than any other manufacturer for 2022. With electric and gasoline powertrains, seven Volvo cars and SUVs received a Top Safety Pick Plus award from the IIHS. The Volvo C40 Recharge electric SUV was one of the main recipients.

Volvo builds safe cars, which is a major selling point for the brand. According to the press release, the fully-electric Volvo C40 Recharge “achieved the highest rating from IIHS for every model tested.”

“We are proud that IIHS has once again recognized our vehicles, including six electric and hybrid models, with Top Safety Pick Plus awards.”

Anders Gustafsson | President and CEO of Volvo Car USA.

The Volvo C40 Recharge is a new compact SUV equipped with the latest safety technology. This includes automatic emergency braking (AEB), forward collision warning (FCW), and pedestrian/cyclist detection standard. Blind-spot warning is called Blind Spot Information System (BLIS) on Volvo cars and SUVs, and is included as a standard feature.

In short, the C40 EV won a variety of IIHS Top Safety Pick Plus awards. Similarly, the 2022 Volvo XC40 SUV (electric and gasoline) also won the IIHS Top Safety Pick Plus award.

Other SUVs and cars that won IIHS Top Safety Pick Plus awards

The 2022 Volvo XC60 and 2022 Volvo XC60 Recharge electric SUV both took home an IIHS Top Safety Pick Plus award. Similarly, the 2022 Volvo XC90 and 2022 Volvo XC90 Recharge electric won the same award. The IIHS categorizes these vehicles as midsize luxury SUVs.

The 2022 Volvo S60 and 2022 Volvo S60 Recharge both received the TSP+ award for midsize luxury cars. The 2022 Volvo V60 Cross Country is a four-door wagon sedan that also comes in the electric Recharge model. Both received the IIHS Top Safety Pick Plus award. The 2022 Volvo S90, S90 Recharge, and the 2022 Volvo V90 Cross Country all snagged the Top Safety Pick Plus award for large luxury cars.

What are the criteria for cars or SUVs to win the TSP+ award?

In order to qualify for an Insurance Institute for Highway Safety Top Safety Pick Plus award, a few criteria need to be met. Automakers needed a ” good ” score for the “driver-side small overlap front, passenger-side small overlap front, moderate overlap front, original side, roof strength, and head restraint tests.”

A score of “advanced” or “superior” in vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-pedestrian evaluations for front crash prevention was necessary. Finally, the headlights need a score of “acceptable” or “good” as well.

In conclusion, Volvo SUVs and cars are some of the safest options for 2022. Using the scores from other experts like Consumer Reports and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), buyers can narrow down the options for a new car.
