Tensions have been escalating at the border between the United States and Mexico. One migrant recently was hit by a Border Patrol SUV while trying to enter California illegally. Now there is a call for an investigation because the strike looks intentional.

Border patrol agent strikes a migrant with an SUV

Border Patrol agents and police officers typically get resources that are intended to help them safely apprehend criminals.

Big trucks and SUVs are often provided to deputies with extra protective gear like bumper guards. This allows the vehicles to be used in criminal pursuits.

But one video shows a Border Patrol agent using his Ford Explorer inceptor to strike a migrant that was making a run for California near the San Ysidro border crossing.

A group of migrants placed a ladder against the border wall and tried to climb over the fence. Then you can spot an SUV flying toward the scene.

It strikes a migrant and keeps on going. In the video, you can see that the brake lights never lit up and the SUV kept on going. The man that was struck quickly jumps up and runs toward Mexico.

The video was captured on a cellphone and it’s being reviewed by the United States Attorney’s Office and U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s Officer of Professional Responsibility.

Customs and Border Protection (CBP) released a statement sharing that Border Patrol arrested two people near the San Ysidro Port of Entry during a human smuggling incident.

The statement mentions that a vehicle collided with an individual who then escaped into Mexico. According to CBS8, Pedro Rios, director of the American Friends Service Committee’s U.S.-Border Program, and human rights advocates are upset by this wording.

The use of ‘collided’ may take away responsibility and intention of what took place. They feel as if the statement is trying to minimize what witnesses captured on video. Should a driver that feels brave enough to use their SUV as a weapon be in the field?
