The midsize Toyota Camry and the compact Honda Civic are two of the most popular sedans available. They are both practical, reliable, safe, and provide good handling. However, the 2023 Toyota Camry has one huge advantage over the 2023 Honda Civic: a hybrid model with excellent gas mileage.

Unlike the 2023 Honda Civic, the 2023 Toyota Camry has a hybrid model

Toyota is the automotive industry leader for hybrid technology — with an extensive lineup of hybrid vehicles. The Japanese automatic has tapped into the consumer demand for fuel-efficient models by giving the hybrid treatment to its gas-powered models, including the 2023 Toyota Camry. Gasoline is a major contributor to vehicle ownership costs — and with the high gas mileage of the Camry Hybrid, this financial burden is minimized.

Conversely, the 2023 Honda Civic doesn’t have a hybrid model for the American market. There’s a hybrid version of the 2023 Civic in other countries. Also, Honda plans on bringing back the Civic Hybrid to the United States in 2024. However, for the 2023 model year, a fully gas-powered model is the only option in the U.S.

The 2023 Toyota Camry Hybrid sedan has a significant edge for gas mileage over the 2023 Honda Civic. Pairing a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with an electric motor, it gets an estimated fuel economy of up to 51 city/53 highway mpg. Efficiency for the midsize sedan is also aided by its regenerative braking system, in which kinetic energy released from braking is captured and then stored in the battery.

The 2023 Honda Civic has an estimated fuel economy of up to 33 city/42 highway mpg. Compared to the Civic, the Camry Hybrid gets eight more mpg for city driving and 11 more mpg for highway driving. That translates to a great deal of savings at the pump.

The high gas mileage also has the benefit of convenience. With its minimal fuel consumption, the Camry doesn’t have to stop at gas stations as frequently as the Civic.

Other ways the Toyota Camry is better than the Honda Civic

There are other ways the 2023 Camry is better than the 2023 Civic. This includes stronger performance with more powerful engine options. It delivers 208 horsepower for the hybrid model and 205 horsepower for the base-level 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine. Also, there’s the available 3.5-liter V-6 engine, which doles out 301 horsepower.

In comparison, the Civic compact sedan produces 158 horsepower for the base-level 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and 180 horsepower for the turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder. Additionally, the Civic Si features another version of the turbo 1.5-liter engine, which generates 200 horsepower. All of these engines are weaker than the Camry’s engines. Plus, unlike the Civic, the Camry offers an all-wheel drive system for enhanced traction.

Another strength of the Camry is safety. It earned a 2023 IIHS Top Safety Pick+ award, which is the highest safety honor from IIHS. However, the Civic received the second-tier IIHS Top Safety Pick rating. Additionally, the Camry is more reliable. It received a J.D. Power reliability rating of 84/100, compared to 80/100 for the Civic.

With its hybrid model, the 2023 Toyota Camry has a huge advantage over the 2023 Honda Civic. For automotive shoppers deciding between the two sedans, the hybrid model is an element to consider, especially those that place a premium on high gas mileage.
