You Can’t Buy a New Toyota SUV or Crossover for Less Than $20,000
Toyota has 25 vehicles in its 2020 product lineup. There are five Toyota SUV models and three crossovers for the year. Toyota has a strong reputation for reliability, safety, and resale value. While each vehicle offers unique features and quality, there isn’t one that sells for less than $20,000.
Those looking to get into a Toyota SUV will have to determine if the slightly higher price point is worth it.
The 2020 Toyota SUV product line
A look at Toyota’s website reveals the company’s expansive SUV offerings. The top-of-the-line Toyota SUV is the 2020 Toyota Land Cruiser, which comes fully loaded with all the bells and whistles. It has a hefty starting price tag to match at $85,415. Next in line is the 2020 Toyota Sequoia SUV that has an MSRP of $49,980.
The middle of the pack Toyota SUV is the 4Runner. Able to handle anything that’s thrown at it, it has a starting price of $36,120. The 2020 Toyota Highlander is a class-leading SUV that offers reliability, quality interior styling, good visibility, and advanced standard safety features. The MSRP is $34,600 for the V6 gas model and $38,200 for the hybrid version.
Which Toyota crossover can you get for under $22K?
When it comes to Toyota crossovers, the popular RAV4 is equipped with a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine. It has an MSRP of $25,950. The hybrid version of the RAV4 starts at $28,350.
As far as price goes, the 2020 C-HR is the best deal in the Toyota SUV product line. It offers progressive styling, good fuel economy, and standard advanced driver assist systems. It has a starting price of $21,295, making it the only Toyota SUV in the 2020 lineup priced lower than $25,000.
Kelley Blue Book says the 2020 Toyota C-HR is “aimed at the young and young of heart.” They said it “blends the dimensions of a subcompact car with the ride height of an SUV and the looks, well, the looks of something otherworldly.”
Edmunds gives the C-HR a 7.1 out of 10 rating, saying that sporty handling makes this crossover a fun vehicle to drive. The impressive exterior styling and standard safety features helped it stand out among the competition. When put to the test, however, the lackluster performance did prove to be disappointing.
How Toyota maintains its popularity
In the subcompact crossover class, the competition includes the Hyundai Kona, Kia Soul, and Honda HR-V. While all of these quality vehicles outperform the 2020 Toyota CH-R according to some critics, drivers keep coming back to the Toyota product.
Known for its reliability and standard safety features, Toyota has developed a loyal fan base. Its products have been a trusted part of the auto industry for many years.
While crossover SUVs are typically more affordable than traditional models, Toyota can charge slightly more. Leaning on its reputation, the company can put its price points a little higher than the competition, and consumers don’t seem to mind.
In 2019, the Toyota RAV4 was the best-selling crossover in the United States. The hybrid version puts out 219 hp getting an estiamted 39 MPG combined and offers plenty of power.
The Toyota Corolla, while not an SUV, is the most sold car on earth, accounting for one out of every 5 Toyota vehicles sold. Continuous innovation, breakthrough technology, and impressive gas mileage contribute to the Corolla’s success. The brand name recognition and production history that exceeds 50 years make it a highly-regarded car among consumers.
The Toyota 4Runner is one of the longest-selling SUVs in the industry. With an almost cult-like following, the rugged SUV is not only reliable but retains its value well. The well-equipped base model has impeccable off-road capabilities, and the 4.0-liter V6 puts out a generous 270 hp with 278 lb-ft of torque.
The popularity of the 2020 Toyota CH-R rides on the backs of these models. The reputation, quality, and dependability blend into this crossover, making it a worthy competitor in the crossover class. Even though this sleek crossover doesn’t have strong performance ratings, it does have the name to back it up.
