The Tesla Cybertruck is one of the most polarizing vehicles of the last decade. Yet, in classic Tesla fashion, fans are desperately clamoring for it. Unfortunately, people who gave Tesla a deposit for the Cybertruck will have to wait a bit longer. Or so we thought. It turns out there is a way to get a Tesla Cybertruck right now.

Anyone who wants a Tesla Cybertruck to drive will have to wait until 2022 or longer. However, if you don’t mind having a Cybertruck that is too small to drive but looks great on a desk, it can be had right now from Mattel’s MEGA brand. MEGA is a toy line that produces plastic building bricks that are similar to LEGO.

MEGA may not be as well known as LEGO, but it still managed to beat them and Tesla itself when it comes to bringing the Cybertruck to market. MEGA can officially claim that its set is the first-ever buildable Cybertruck available.

This set is targeted toward collectors and automotive enthusiasts, which is why it has a hefty $250 price tag. The set comprises over 3,000 pieces, so owners are likely getting a lot of detail for their money.

The set even has easter eggs, such as a broken window decal that references the reveal’s viral moment. The set also has adjustable suspension to raise and lower the Cybertruck’s height, a functional tonneau cover, and a folding tailgate that can slide into the truck’s frame.

To stick with the “cyber” theme, MEGA created an Augmented Reality experience that allows potential customers to view a scalable, virtual version in their environment.

Jokes aside, it seems like a novel way for someone to better understand the scale and design of the Cybertruck.

It will be a while before anyone can get the real Cybertruck

When the Tesla Cybertruck was revealed in 2019, fans were expecting to drive it by 2021. Unfortunately for them, the global pandemic effectively dashed any hope of that. Eventually, Tesla quietly confirmed the rumors by delaying the Cybertruck.

No official announcement was made. Tesla simply changed the phrasing on the official Cybertruck website to say customers “will be able to complete your configuration as production nears in 2022.”

If production doesn’t begin until 2022, then chances are the Cybertruck will release sometime toward the end of 2022 or 2023. That is assuming that the global chip shortage does not delay production any further.

Can the Cybertruck compete with the Rivian R1T or Ford F-150 Lightning?

The Tesla Cybertruck is certainly not conventional. Even Elon Musk admitted that there is a chance the Cybertruck could flop. Furthermore, there are more “traditional” electric trucks available now and coming soon.

The Rivian R1T is the first major electric truck on the market, and reviewers are already falling in love with it. The Ford F-150 Lightning has all the utility truck fans are looking for without the polarizing Blade Runner aesthetic of the Cybertruck.

Ford has already received so many orders for the F-150 Lightning; it had to double its production target.

Will Tesla fandom be enough to make the Cybertruck competitive against other compelling, practical trucks? We’ll have to wait at least another year to find out.

In the meantime, you can grab a set from MEGA and build your own Cybertruck.
