Depending on the car you drive, you’ve likely been subjected to some fairly harsh judgment. If you drive a Nissan Altima, you’ve likely been coined as “aggressive” or known for not maintaining your car. If a Jeep Wrangler is in your driveway and keep it clean, your rig has likely been dubbed a “mall crawler.”

Prius owners are known to hog mountain roads and refuse to pull over for the mile-long line of cars behind them, and Honda Civic people are known for acting like the highway is the Corkscrew at Laguna Seca.

Researchers at LendingTree spent a year (Jan. 1, 2024–Dec. 31,2024) asking thousands of drivers as part of a new survey to determine which automaker attracts the worst of the worst. By analyzing insurance inquiries during that time, particularly accidents, DUIs, speeding tickets, and citations, it can be assumed an accident was likely caused by bad driving.

Putting the most common stereotypes aside, you’ll probably be surprised by the findings.

Tesla drivers are the worst, actually

Maybe you’re not surprised by this one. But, even with the plethora of driver assists, auto emergency braking, and semi-autonomous driving abilities, Tesla operators had the most inquiries (36.94 incidents per 1,000) than any other automaker.

Ram truck owners were the second worst, with 33.92 incidents, and Subaru took third place with 32.85 incidents per 1,000 drivers. Ram was fitting for second place, as the truck brand had the most incidents in New Jersey with 74.20 incidents per 1,000 motorists.

Otherwise, they were labeled the worst in 16 states. Tesla drivers, however, were named the worst in nine states.

Contrary to popular belief, BMW drivers ranked seventh on the list of the nation’s worst drivers. However, the brand attracts drunk drivers, as BMW earned second place for drivers with the most DUIs. Pontiac takes first place in that category.

Mercury owners are the safest

Fans of Ford’s luxury division had the lowest incidents at 18.63 per 1,000 drivers, and Pontiac took second place, despite having the most reported DUIs.

Maybe it’s because old people typically drive Mercury vehicles (playing on stereotypes here), and they’re definitely not the ones speeding or getting DUIs.

Cadillac drivers take the third slot for best drivers, with Chevrolet and Ford drivers tying for last place. Their popularity as fleet vehicles may have something to do with that, too.
