Not too long ago, Mercedes-Benz put out a bit of a preview of an upcoming collaborative car. It was designed in collaboration with Black Eyed Peas star Will.I.Am. Though it was pretty obscure, it was clearly a sedan of some sort. Though, it seemed to have the front end from a G-wagon. Now, Mercedes has completely pulled back the curtains and given the car a full reveal.

In the official Mercedes-Benz press release, the full reveal of the car (called “The Flip”) shows its silhouette was not misleading us. It’s a long and low coupe with a set of funky round headlights that are indeed quite reminiscent of the G-wagon’s. In fact, the whole front end seems to take on the boxy G-wagon inspiration. The fenders match the boxy shape in flares and taper down to meet the rest of the coupe’s width. Admittedly, it doesn’t seem to fit the rest of the body lines all that well.

From the front back, though, it looks phenomenal. It features a pair of hood vents reminiscent of the ones on the Mercedes-McLaren SLR. Up top, it has a glass roof with a T-top style split up the middle. Finally, and perhaps the most stand-out feature, The Flip features a set of suicide doors, meaning they open the opposite direction of a standard car door. Honestly, it’s a pretty cool thing to see on a modern car.

The car is based on the Mercedes-Benz AMG GT 4-Door Coupe. Though it doesn’t specify the powerplant, it’s safe to assume that it’s the twin-turbocharged V8 found in the standard model, given Will.I.Am’s statement about leaving the engine alone.

“…I didn’t touch the engine because AMG really does make the best engines. The story of the founders of AMG truly inspires me, and it is energizing to collaborate with like-minded people who also seek continuous improvement,” said Will.I.Am.

Whether or not you like the styling, you can’t hate its purpose

The Flip brings with it a line of apparel also designed by Will.I.Am called the “bear witness” collection. It features a bear design that takes inspiration from the classic Mercedes-Benz emblem. A proceed of the sales from this clothing line go to the I.Am.Angel Foundation. The foundation was started by the musician to help inner-city kids gain access to science, art, and technology education.

“Our cooperation with Will.I.Am has reached a new peak with ‘The Flip.’ We have inspired and motivated each other in the realization of this holistic concept, which is far more than an exceptional automotive one-off. We take our responsibility to society seriously. The success of Mercedes-AMG as a Performance Luxury brand also depends to a large extent on inspiring the next generation and giving them easy access to the latest technologies and digital progress. It is part of our tradition to always be pioneers and to dare to do something new. We are continuing this legacy into the future together with will.i.am and ‘The Flip'”, according to Philipp Schiemer, Chairman of the Board of Management of Mercedes-AMG GmbH.

Overall, it’s great to see the likes of Mercedes and a superstar musician using publicity and pull to direct help to those in need. Whether or not you’re a fan of the car’s design doesn’t matter. What does matter is that it’s controversial and is drawing attention to a great cause.
