As SUVs continue to be one of the best-selling segments in the automotive industry, Toyota has been capitalizing on its SUV lineup by offering hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and electric vehicles. But there is a key vehicle that is missing from Toyota’s offering. There is not currently a Prius SUV being sold. Which is a bit confusing considering the success that the Toyota Prius has had over the years. There are multiple models of the Prius today, but none are an SUV. So, why is it?

Toyota does not sell a Prius SUV

The Toyota Prius is offered in multiple configurations, neither of which is an SUV.

The Toyota Prius has been on sale for over 20 years, and in the past, it has seen great success. Boasting nearly 15,000 units being sold each month. With gas prices currently reaching highs not seen since 2008, it would not be a surprise if hybrid vehicles gain even more traction in the industry than they already have.

Despite sales of the Prius not being what it used to be, it is still a strong and recognized nameplate from Toyota. But the brand has not shown any teasers or releases of the potential for a Prius SUV.

Why is there no Prius SUV?

There may be some key reasons why Toyota has not built a Prius SUV. With the popularity of small hybrid models like the RAV4, it is not that the brand is unwilling to explore hybrid SUVs.

In 2021, Toyota reintroduced the Toyota Venza. This model is only available with four-wheel drive and is powered by a hybrid powertrain. The model entered its second generation and is produced in Japan. For 2021 alone, Toyota sold over 60,000 units of the new Venza.

In addition to the Venza, there are three other Toyota hybrid SUVs. These include the Highlander Hybrid, RAV4 Hybrid, and the RAV4 Prime. The RAV4 Prime even offers the ability for an all-electric mode as a plug-in hybrid.

Should you buy a hybrid Toyota?

Toyota has been pioneering hybrid technology for some time, which makes its hybrid vehicles worthy of consideration. Whether shopping for a small crossover or a larger SUV, there is likely a hybrid option from Toyota that will suit your specific needs.

Hybrid models often offer more efficiency than a traditional gas engine. Additionally, hybrid vehicles deliver more technology as well. Which is something that is likely to be appreciated. This technology includes things like safety and infotainment.

Could there be a Prius SUV in the future?

Only Toyota knows the direction that it is choosing to go. But we can only speculate that a Prius SUV would be a popular option. Many drivers recognize the Prius name, which could lead to solid sales of an SUV option.

Toyota currently has two Prius models on sale, but neither is an SUV. According to MotorTrend, the Prius is no longer Toyota’s best-selling hybrid. A Prius SUV could revamp the name and would be another option for those shopping for a new hybrid vehicle. But for now, buyers will have to look for a different model.
